Finally! Maybe they will start debate on the floor....hopefully. Or does the Senate have to have a 3rd reading before it can be debated?

Yes, there's a 3rd reading, but the Senate routinely approves a motion to suspend the waiting period and move directly to the third reading. Sometimes it doesn't happen, but this is the common practice.joe817 wrote:Finally! Maybe they will start debate on the floor....hopefully. Unless my math is wrong, it looks like SB 17 has 15 authors/coauthors. That means only one additional vote is needed for passage. I would hope that means Senate passage is a pretty safe bet.

Correct, and I've been assured by Huffines he would vote for it. He mentioned he also sat in on the committee hearing for it.Srnewby wrote:Unless my math is wrong, it looks like SB 17 has 15 authors/coauthors. Correct, but it takes 19 votes to bring the Bill up for debate and vote. We should be okay on that number also, but it's not certain.Srnewby wrote:Unless my math is wrong, it looks like SB 17 has 15 authors/coauthors. That means only one additional vote is needed for passage.

Re: SB17 OC Bill On Intent Calendar for 3-16-2015.
I've seen it mentioned somewhere else (not this forum) that if a bill is placed on the intent calendar, it needs a 2/3 vote to pass instead of the simple majority it would take if it wasn't on the intent calendar. Is that right, or was that information incorrect? Excuse my ignorance, this is the first lege session I've followed.
Keep calm and carry.

In order to bring up a bill for debate, it used to require a 2/3 vote (21 votes), but this session it was reduced to a 3/5 vote (19). It still takes only a simple majority to pass.mr1337 wrote:I've seen it mentioned somewhere else (not this forum) that if a bill is placed on the intent calendar, it needs a 2/3 vote to pass instead of the simple majority it would take if it wasn't on the intent calendar. In your read-only bill update, Charles, you said it would be at 2 pm, 30 minutes "after adjournment." What does that mean? I wonder if that means it won't be on the live video broadcast.

The House companion bills for open carry and campus carry are scheduled for committee hearing next week, so I'll be cautiously optimistic that things will get moving soon - for now.

Yep. The state fiscal year starts 9/1, so bills go into effect then, to synch with funding appropriations. They'll need that much time to address signage issues, police training, etc. anyway.txglock21 wrote:September 1, 2015...(if I'm not mistaken).CoffeeNut wrote:Out of curiosity if these pass and the Governor signs how quickly can/will they take effect?
