Business Casual Carry

For the past several months I've been employed as a manager where we generally wear what is commonly described as "business casual" at work. No suits. Mostly long, or short-sleeve shirts (depending on the weather), and slacks, or khakis. On that rare occasion I might even wear a tie, but no jacket unless it's a formal meeting. As the weather gets cooler I frequently wear a sports jacket -- or even my old USAF, leather flight jacket -- but for the majority of the year it's just a shirt, and slacks.

During this time of year I have absolutely no problem concealing under the jacket. During the warmer months? Well...

I am not totally crazy about ankle holsters (but am willing to consider, and train with one), and unless I'm wearing something pretty baggy a pocket carry really has many opportunities to print, but that is really where I am leaning. Kind of figuring on finding the right slacks to accomodate this carry style.

Wearing a full size service handgun like a 1911 or a M&P in a Comp-Tac Minotaur (shirt tucked in) with a dressy gun belt, I have never been "made". I tug the shirt tail up just a touch on both sides so that the bottom of the shirt blouses out slightly and is not form fitting near the gun.

Second that. Minotaurs, Crossbreeds and several other manufacturers have similar gear. To be clear the holding clips are designed such that you can tuck the shirt in between the clip and the belt.

Wear black belts with black clips and you'll not be seen. Wear slightly patterned shirts. It helps break up the pattern. If somehow someone spots the clip, just tell them its a medical device attachment and look at them like how dare they ask such a question!

For tuckable IWB holsters, I really like the Comp-Tac MTAC or the Minotaur MTAC as Jumping Frog suggests. It's very rare that I carry like this, but when necessary, nothing beats this combination. I have MTAC holsters because I always wear an undershirt so I don't need the leather feature of the Minotaur MTAC.

I always wear a black belt and use black clips so they don't stand out. My preferred clip is a "J" Clip that apparently Greg doesn't make any longer, but you could make one in about 2 minutes by cutting off the top protrusion of a Comp-Tac "C" Clip. The "J" clip goes behind the belt and only a small portion appears at the bottom edge of the belt.

If you carry with a tucked shirt often, then consider getting a gun belt with Velcro on the inside. Then you can use Comp-Tac's "V" Clips that do not show on the outside of the belt at all. Based upon your warm weather routine, this might be the best route, since it sounds like you're around the same people for extended periods of time. Although "J" Clips as close to invisible as you can get (since people don't really pay attention), the "V Clips simply do not show.

I wear jeans or khakis to work, sometimes slacks. I usually carry OWB with a wicking black undershirt topped with an untucked polo shirt, or sometimes a Hawaiian shirt. When I carry OWB I normally carry a full size Glock, CZ, or N frame 8 shot .357. When I can't carry untucked I carry a snubbie, XDS, or Sig P938 in a pocket holster. I don't really like that much weight in my pocket but I've never had a problem with concealment. I've also tried the snubbie and P938 in an ankle holster, usually when I have to go to meetings outside my normal workplace, and that works fine as well, though obviously the weapon is not as easily accessible. I have also carried in the inside pocket of a sports coat when I'm going to a meeting where I might need to take my jacket off and hang it behind me on my chair. When it's not practical to belt carry a spare mag or speed loader I use an ankle carrier.

I am mostly at my desk, so I just keep something full sized in my briefcase on the floor in easy reaching distance. If I need it on me, then I will usually do a Ruger SP-101 in the pocket. Outside of the workplace, I will go IWB, but not at work.

I am sure this doesn't apply to everyone, but I have went down the J clip route and the gun rest on the pants not the belt. I am seeking out the V clip idea as well. I have seen picks of C clips that seem like they are the best bet. Comp-tac doesn't really make any holsters that fit my needs though sadly.
