Dallas Hospital Isolates Possible Ebola Case

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas has a patient under strict isolation for investigation of possible Ebola infection. The initial diagnosis was based on symptoms and the patient's recent overseas travel destinations. The patient's name has not been released.

The CDC was called in and is expecting a yea or nay confirmation of the diagnosis Tuesday, September 30. A few other U.S. hospitals have admitted suspected Ebola patients, but so far all have been tested negative for the virus. This is the first hospital admission in Texas.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas is located at Greenville Avenue and Walnut Hill Lane in Northeast Dallas.

The only way I see to contain Ebola is by closing all flights coming in and out of the areas the outbreak is in. :rules:

They would just fly into Mexico and walk across the border. Unless we make some drastic changes there is no containing it.

The result from the CDC's blood test is expected before 4:00 p.m. Central today. No additional identifying info on the patient, but it's a male and he traveled from Liberia.

Isn't ebola pretty transmissible for up to a week or more before onset of symptoms?

No... and... requires direct contact with bodily fluids.

Ebola then spreads through human-to-human transmission via direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes) with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and with surfaces and materials (e.g. bedding, clothing) contaminated with these fluids.

Symptoms of Ebola virus disease

The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms is 2 to 21 days. Humans are not infectious until they develop symptoms. First symptoms are the sudden onset of fever fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, symptoms of impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding

Fox News is reporting that the patient in Dallas tested positive, that he is in fact the first "in the wild" Ebola case in the U.S.

Evidently the CDC will hold a press conference at 4:30 p.m. Central Time.

It is not easy to catch and you must have direct contact with the individual. The area this comes from has a very poor sanitation standards. Easily passed between people when they have no modern healthcare readily available. I am more worried about the storms coming Thursday and possibly getting struck by lightning.

Tell that to everyone who traveled and has been in contact with this person since wheels up from Liberia.

We will see.

Not quite accurate. Contact with body fluids is the method of transmission. The infected person doesn't have to be there, just the fluids.
