One gun per month? Howabout one background check per month

Post by ELB »

This article at BusinessInsider.com has a small article and a map on the number of background checks (NICS) per capita per state. (I'm not sure why, but I seem to recall BI is not a big friend of 2A, but I might be wrong on that. Dunno if that has any impact on this article or not.)

It is interesting enough as it is, but I was really surprised to see Kentucky has 40.2 background checks per 100 population - the next closest state is North Carolina, at 9.8 per 100. Texas is in the range 2 to 4 per 100.

Then I read this:
You might be inclined to think that Kentucky has an irregularly large number of gun enthusiasts, but there's actually a simple explanation. Kentucky's numbers are distorted because gun owners with state-issued concealed weapons permits have monthly background checks.
Man, talk about bureaucratic churn.

Becasue they want to make sure that if you get convicted of a felony that you lose your CHL? Seems like there must be an easier way to catch it, like ya know, the way all the other states do it...

I've read this before, and I'm extremely curious as to what this costs the State of Kentucky. I can't imagine that running monthly background checks is cheap. Does anybody have any insight into this?

Haven't we been told that it takes about a month or so to do our background check for our CHL? This would make it seem like once they received the results they would start all over again the next day.

They're NICS checks, which take seconds. Not FBI background checks.
