Will Perry's CHL Be Suspended?

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

Well, as it is, we simply have Perry's word that this happened. We really have no proof for or against. But as it's said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And that which is asserted w/o evidence may be similarly dismissed." Given Perry's penchant for self-promotion, I think had this really happened, he'd have had pictures out the wazoo of him posing with the carcass and his defensless dog and would have probably had the pelt made into a coonskin-style hat to wear at rallys.

That said, here's the troubling parts to me.

It was a single, well-placed round from a LCP. (That in itself is almost an oxymoron.)
There were no witnesses. (Wouldn't his bodyguards have come forward, praising Dead-eye Rick for his skill?)
There was no coyote carcass brought forward.
He's a politician.
It's a self-serving statement.
He was in the midst of a gubernatorial race with Mark White, and this story plays into the rugged, macho Texas image that he likes to cultivate.
He parsed the story by saying that the 'coyote dropped' and 'it felt no pain', which leaves room for plausible deniability.
And, for the last 40 years, I've ascribed to the theory that you can tell when a politician is lying because his lips are moving. I haven't been disappointed yet.
As easy as this would have been to put to bed, the fact that it wasn't speaks volumes.

But, it could have happened. For some folks, that he said he did is proof enough.
In other words, you have no reason or evidence other than you don't like or trust Perry.
For you, apparently not.

I don't like Obama either but, I'm pretty sure OBL is dead. (This would be a textbook example of extraordinary evidence, videos, pictures, witnesses, carcass, all the things the Perry story lacks.) My disdain for politicians has nothing to do with facts. Come to think about it, politicians have nothing to do with facts.

BTW, did you mention the reasons that you believe it happened? Other than you like and trust Perry.

Rick Perry has a lot more on his plate than just taking time to make up stories about shooting a coyote. He is also a lot more creative than many and if it was going to be made up, why not make it something like a bear, mountain lion or chupacabra instead of a coyote.

Just common sense and taking the man for his word until I have evidence or valid reason to believe otherwise. I don't think he would just come up with something like that out of the wild blue.

I noticed your opinion follows closely to those promoted by Slate, Huffington Post, The Daily Beast and other similar progressive propaganda pushers.

Just read the story again.

Out jogging with lab and coyote tries to take easy meal. Totally plausible. This is actually a fairly common behavior among coyote. The animal services officers I work with call it supper on a string.

Just after sunrise; enough light to see well enough. It would be very short range. Number of shots taken not mentioned. .380 hollow points. Story says coyote was dropped right there. This could be embellishment. I don't think he would have stated he shot the coyote and it ran off to die somewhere else.

You noticed that did you? Was it just me, or do you notice that of anyone whose opinion differs from yours?

As to your "follows closely" and "promoted by" perjoratives, I expressed MY opinion and stated the reasons why. Whether or not someone else agrees (or disagrees) with it matters not and changes nothing, it's still MY opinion. As Warren Buffet (my capitalist hero) says, "Being agreed with doesn't make you right or wrong." That said, it's not carved in stone, I just haven't seen anything that has convinced me otherwise. It's still possible that it happened, I just don't think it's likely.

And, common sense is taking a politician at his word? Especially about a self-agrandizing statement? Well of course, politicians never lie and they certainly wouldn't lie to make themselves look better.

Really? A Texas Coyote will take on a dog the size of a lab near a human?
I've lived in Texas a long time and most Coyote's that I've seen are pretty skittish and probably don't weigh as much as a lab...
Serious question. I've never had any fear of coyotes... If one was hanging about, I'd think something was wrong (rabies).

You didn't just state your opinion. You asked a question and I responded with a question. Your answer wasn't based on any facts or evidence or credible sources. When I did a search to see what you may be basing your comments on, I noticed most of the progressive propaganda rags I mentioned also had the same or similar comments and questions you did.

I do not care if you agree with me or not. I only questioned if you have a basis for your thinking Perry lied other than your dislike for him or politicians in general. As it turns out, you don't. Therefore, my opinion and position is no less valid than yours. I'll take the man at his word until I have a credible reason to believe otherwise.

The idea someone could shoot a coyote and kill it with a Ruger LCP while out on an early morning is very plausible regardless what your cynical mind may think. By the way, when you throw out unfounded innuendo and call someone a liar with a credible basis for it, you should expect to get called on it.

Do you and cb automatically assume this guy is lying also?

:iagree:

I was kinda thinking the same thing, but as this self-inflicted wound that I started has taken on a life of it's own and become a referendum for political leanings (as is usually the case), I didn't expand. I also have a 72lb lab mix that is so laid back that folks refer to him as "The Dude" (Big Lebowski). That said, he recently showed an aggressive Husky the error of his ways and a coyote would only be a threat to him as a choking hazard.

When the coyote came out of the brush toward his daughter's labrador retriever puppy on a February jog, he charged it and shot it with his .380 Ruger pistol.

I can't speak for CB, (man, you just can't seem to grasp the concept of personal opinions), but >>> I <<< think the guy was embellishing. Based solely on the video and not knowing the guy, I think there probably was a coyote (but not an uber-coyote) on his property, that his dogs did bark at it, that he probably shot at it and may have hit it (blood specks). Everything else seems a bit much. And, as you appreciate the echo chamber, read the remarks under the video. Most folks think the guys a wannabe Rambo and a douche. (Make that wannabe Rick)

No, coyotes don't attack larger dogs.

At least the dog wins this one.

It looks like DPS must suspend his license if they wish to obey the law.
Schleprock wrote:GC §411.187. SUSPENSION OF LICENSE. (a) The department shall suspend a
license under this section if the license holder:
(1) is charged with the commission of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor
or equivalent offense, or of an offense under Section 42.01, Penal Code, or

While GC §411.187 (a) says the license shall be suspended... it's not exactly automatic:

The very next section, GC §411.187 (b) says:
(b) If a peace officer believes a reason listed in Subsection (a) to suspend a license exists, the officer shall prepare an affidavit on a form provided by the department stating the reason for the suspension of the license and giving the department all of the information available to the officer at the time of the preparation of the form. The officer shall attach the officer's reports relating to the license holder to the form and send the form and the attachments to the appropriate division of the department at its Austin headquarters not later than the fifth working day after the date the form is prepared. The officer shall send a copy of the form and the attachments to the license holder. If the license holder has not surrendered the license or the license was not seized as evidence, the license holder shall surrender the license to the appropriate division of the department not later than the 10th day after the date the license holder receives the notice of suspension from the department unless the license holder requests a hearing from the department. The license holder may request that the justice court in the justice court precinct in which the license holder resides review the suspension as provided by Section 411.180. If a request is made for the justice court to review the suspension and hold a hearing, the license holder shall surrender the license on the date an order of suspension is entered by the justice court.
So unless Gov Perry voluntarily handed over his license, or one of the deputies seized it as "evidence" (evidence of what?) at his booking it looks like he keeps his license until some peace officer takes the initiative to officially notify the Department of Public Safety via an affidavit, and the Department tells the Gov he has to fork it over. I wonder if one of his body guards will volunteer to do it? ;-) I suspect that if Lehmberg or McCrum realize this, they might direct one of the DA's investigators to do it.
