APD pays a probationary officer $56,397 plus medical, pension and other fringe benefits. If they "have to" work a second job, the problem is spending not income.

Well, if one is single and doesn't have any other real obligations, someone could certainly live in $60-$70k but with a pretty minimal lifestyle and not much preparing for the future. For a family, I'd say a 2nd or 3rd job would indeed be required to support a somewhat comfortable life and do a little preparing for the future.

I would have to move to a big city to ever see that salary. Once I get a few years experience I plan on applying with the bigger departments. Most LEOs around here live off the side jobs.

Is Denton considered a big city? they're starting out at $51,837 and upon completion of training move up to $53,141.

To me yeah it is. The LEO salarys around here range from 25-35k average. A few of the big cities like Longview or Tyler start out in the mid to high 40s but they are civil service and tough to get on. I will apply to them in the future but for now I'm looking full time work.

I've researched quite a few LE agencies in Texas and APD's pay, especially entry level, is one of the exceptions and not the rule. Most agencies don't pay nearly that well here.
