Do any of you carry chl insurance through the chl protection plan? Does'nt sound like a bad idea to have and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with it good or bad.

It took a considerable amount of time "customizing", but the way ours is set up is described on "Freedom Plans" page at http://www.dentoncountysports.com. The gist of it:

Brief Background: Although most people never read the fine print, the "Personal Liability" portion of typical homeowners insurance policies - and even many "umbrella" policies - generally have exclusions for "intentional acts". As such, in the rare event of having dealt with Problem #1 (the criminal) via their handgun, CHL people can be in for a very rude awakening in having to deal with Problem #2 (the defense, criminal and/or civil).

In conjunction with a new insurance policy (which runs from June 9, 2007 until at least June 8, 2008), each of DCSA's five Freedom Plan levels now includes liability insurance coverage for members with a current Freedom Plan and a current Texas Concealed Handgun License on file.

Subject to a few limitations and exclusions, this new NRA-endorsed policy gives such Freedom Plan members up to $50,000 of coverage if they have to use their handgun in lawful self defense. It can pay reimbursement for criminal defense, and/or civil defense, but in the civil defense, it is only if they are not found guilty of a crime. If there is money left over after a civil defense and the case is lost, that money can go to damage awards.

The one I found was linked to thr TSRA site and for a yearly fee is supposed to pay all legal fees if the chl holder ever has to use their weapon. It's called "CHL Protection Plan" and is in Dallas.

Sounds to me like ya need to dig a little (or a lot) deeper. "The large print giveth and the small print taketh away." IIRC, that one covers only through grand jury level.

They came by our table at the TSRA show in Feb. I asked a few questions, how far into the process does this cover, how fast a response and such. They only cover to grand jury. If it goes beyond GJ, normal fees are charged. Response time was never answered, even after asking several times.

They wanted to advertise here. Told them we did not accept advertising and they should contact Charles about posting here. Not sure if they ever did.

NRA backed insurance is a better way for me to go.

I sent an email to the CHL Protection Plan to ask for a copy of their contract. I never received a reply.

I did the same with the other outfit based in Harris County. Same result. They seem to want your money before providing the fine print.
