The Deputy was no billed by a grand jury. The man was crazy and off his meds, threatening to kill himself with a knife, when family members called police.
Lunged at the officer with his knife.
Quanell X now involved.
If your loved one is crazy and has a weapon. Leave the home. Calling the police will probably just make it worse.

Re: video released of sherrif's deputy killing man in bathro
I agree. Inflammatory headlines are frequently devastating to officers who have had to take a life in such a situation. Give them the benefit of the doubt until all the evidence is in. I know there are bad apples, but compared to the great majority of police officers, they are a tiny minority.
I disagree that just leaving and waiting for them to cool down is a solution. Intervene by getting them to medical help before a weapon gets involved. Leaving them to their own devices invites a wider catastrophe. Have we learned nothing from the mass shootings involving mentally disturbed people?

They used non leathal first and it was ineffective, you lunge at a officer with a knife it will end bad for you. I don't care if the person is mental or not, a threat is a threat and my goal is for I to go home. If you disagree with the police protecting themselves and putting their life and safety first then don't call them.

Maybe LEOs should be issued a strong tranquilizer to be shot from air gun pistol or a rifle.

Back when I used to work in psych hospitals, I used to see adolescent kids go uneffected by a dose of thorazine that would put an average adult in a stupor for days. In fact, one of the psychiatrists I worked with once told me that in order to see what thorazine would do to his patients, he took a mild dose & was out of it for 3 days.

+1. If he goes next door or to the mall or on the bus and starts stabbing (or shooting, beating,...), you own a piece of that. If he is so out of control that you cannot handle him yourself, it is not right to dump that on unsuspecting others.ShootDontTalk wrote:

You also have to realize that when you call the cops, you're not calling a psychiatrist or a psychologist or therapist. You are calling on force to put this person back under control.

Its' hard to see where everybody is. The initial shots seem to have certainly justified. But later the officer is firing the weapon at a significant downward angle. I'd say more than 45 degrees. I know we shoot until the threat is abated. How much of a threat would an attacker be if you're engaging him at a 45 degree downward angle on a level surface?

If he still has a weapon in his hand, he may still be a significant threat. Remember, if he tries to get back up, he is in a nearly perfect position to lunge at you. Also, you may not be able to see whether or not he still has a weapon. Which way would you guess?BigGuy wrote:Its' hard to see where everybody is. The initial shots seem to have certainly justified. During a life threading situation most fire over and over and don't realize it. Short term memory lose is common also and I know some LEOs who thought they only shot once but when you watch the video they emptied an entire mag.BigGuy wrote:Its' hard to see where everybody is. Re: video released of sherrif's deputy killing man in bathro
that's true, definitely can see an immediate armed threat and the first couple of shots were definitely warranted. after those first couple of shots his arms dropped quite a bit and was probably a little overkill... but any leo will tell you that it doesn't matter how many shots as long as a threat hasnt been stopped. we can't see from the video if the first few shots stopped him or not. i seriously doubt though that as far as he dropped his arms that he was still an immediate threat.....if he was on his feet whole nother ballgame but it seemed as if he followed shooting all the way to the ground and then some....BigGuy wrote:Its' hard to see where everybody is. Before any of you fall into this family's lawyer's trap and decide the deputy fired "too many" shots or fired "after the threat had ceased", take some time to study the effects of life-or-death stress on a human's sympathetic nervous system, including the visual and auditory distortions and reduced ability to properly control fine motor skills.
Then decide if the split-second time between when YOU think gunfire SHOULD have stopped (based on the perspective of a video you can watch multiple times at your leisure) and when the gunfire actually stopped is sufficient to question this deputy's actions and intentions.
Finally, decide whether you want YOUR innocence based on a lawyer-provoked Monday morning armchair analysis if YOU are, God forbid, ever involved in a life-or-death incident.
If you'd like a primer on how life-or-death stress affects the body's SNS as relates to deadly force scenarios, read this:

Re: video released of sherrif's deputy killing man in bathro
This one looks pretty tragic, yet quite possibly unavoidable. Sometimes life just presents an impossible situation.
As to whether a person having a psychotic break will go nuts on a local gun free zone, and whether you should call the police or no. You know your relative the best. You likely have seen what they are capable of. You know if they will just rant and rave in the house and then take a nap or will go looking for trouble. The police are force and sometimes brutal even lethal force. Be aware of that. Be smart. Use your best judgment.
