It amazes me that we don't let dirt bikes, ATVs, and gas powered golf carts use roadways but we let 12 year olds on bicycles on the roads. Simply doesn't make any sense.

You did not prove me wrong in my post. I said In response to my post, none of them said ________ I didn't read the whole thread and don't pretend to have. They didn't say anything of the sort, In response to my post.JP171 wrote:jmra wrote:Will get flamed for this but IMHO bicycles do not belong on most roadways. JR, lookie here OOOPPPS so yes it was said and bicycles are not allowed on any roadway that is considered to be a 70 mph highway unless a permit is issued with the exception of the road being a rural roadway. I did not contradict myself in anyway as I NEVER said that a bicycle shouldn't be on a roadway but rather that a requirement should be in place as driving is a privilege and NOT a right, you want to operate a motor vehicle then comply with the requirement same as those who ride motorcycles must have a motorcycle safety course to get a license now for the motorcycle.
oh and here ya go stay the heck off the highway, hmm didn't say it?????
JR's 12 Valve wrote: A lot of folks bike for a hobby, I say go for it ... but stay the heck off the highway. I personally believe they should leave their riding to suburban neighborhoods, dedicated bike paths, or at least roads with very little traffic on it.
It doesn't make much sense for someone to ride a 6lb piece of steel, while just about every other moving object on the road weighs in excess of 4,000 lbs, and is moving at about 55 MPH.
I have not seen a bicycle on I-20, but I have seen multiple cyclists on 16, which I guess could be considered a "Rural roadway." With the standard vehicle around here to be at the least a half-ton pickup, up to a one-ton with a trailer, up to an 18 wheeler with an oversized load, it would be safer for them to ride in another area.
I did not say driving was a right and not a privilege. I do not understand your position when you say I think ALL persons that have a drivers license should have to go thru a 2 year motorcycle/moped requirement before being allowed to operate a vehicle over 1000 lbs PERIOD!
As for the last part, I stand corrected. I did say "But heck stay off the highway," but I did not mean it as "They shouldn't be allowed on the highway." I could have worded that better to get my point across.

Out where I live the two lane FM road is 70mph and there is maybe a half foot of shoulder. Bikes should not be on that road, but yet they always are. And it would be impossible to give them 3 feet of space when that would put you into oncoming 70mph traffic. Luckily we don't have that stupid buffer ordinance here.
I'm not against people riding bikes, but there are plenty of places to ride other than on a 70mph road. As much as I hate gravel trucks too, I always get a chuckle when they pass the bikes and give them a good "sand blasting".
JM, JR and Poppo, does that mean those of us that have a 400 lb vehicle should yield or give right of way to you cagers too???? if so, umm hmm well get in the ring, and if you don't know the song look it up. Its real simple bicycles have the same rights to the road as automobiles and every other vehicle, don't like it move someplace that the communists control life and don't allow it. oh that's right just wait for a few more years and we'll be there in this country. I don't condone bicycles or motorcycles acting a fool but cagers are haters when it comes to bikes of any kind no matter be it motor driven or not and think like JMRA " those darn things don't belong on the road" and "were bigger so we will do what ever we want to them". This kind of attitude sickens me, I think ALL persons that have a drivers license should have to go thru a 2 year motorcycle/moped requirement before being allowed to operate a vehicle over 1000 lbs PERIOD!
Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

Yes, the right of the people to never be inconvenienced, especially on the road, was a gross oversight on the part of the founding fathers.jmra wrote:Will get flamed for this but IMHO bicycles do not belong on most roadways. They should have also made it a right to never have to stand in line or wait for people to cross the street.

Actually it has nothing whatsoever to do with me. My concern was for the safety of the guy getting scraped off the side of the road. Well, then using that logic, we should all be driving 18 wheelers since they can destroy pickup trucks, pickup trucks can destroy sedans and sedans can destroy Minis and Smart Cars and they can destroy motorcycles and bicycles.jmra wrote:Actually it has nothing whatsoever to do with me. OR, people could just pay attention.
Just like gun control, it's not really about safety, it's just an excuse to try to try and prevent others from doing things you don't like.

BTW, last I checked pickup trucks, sedans, Minis, Smart Cars, and motorcycles could all keep up with the flow of traffic and did not impede it resulting in a hazard to themselves or others in the least.

Which is a knife that cuts both ways. That bicyclist I almost hit the other day violated numerous traffic laws BEFORE he swerved in front of me while I was accelerating, but his friendly little wave of acknowledgement when I let him know he needed to pay better attention indicated to me that he just didn't care. But I'll bet if I had hit him he would have been sure that I was the only one at fault. One more reason to see to it that I mount the camera every time.android wrote: . . . What does that have to do with anything? Pick any group of people - bicyclist, motorcyclists, truck drivers.. You'll find some that behave badly. It doesn't invalidate the laws that you should be following.mrvmax wrote:I would like to follow him around and see how many traffic laws he violates on his bike. I've been on both sides of this. As a cyclist, sometimes cars get too close. Technically you should be treated like any other vehicle.
Then again, I've seen bicyclists (more than one) completely ignore traffic laws. Lane split. Run stop lights.
And there can be lack of courtesy. I took a 2-lane (no passing) road through the hill country. A bicyclist was in front of me - obviously training. Technically, I can't come within 3' and I can't pass him in a no-passing zone. No shoulder, so legally I need to wait until he pulled over. After following at a safe distance for 20 minutes, I gave up on him "getting it" or appreciating the courtesy and made the illegal pass.

It has a lot to do with it, if he is on this tirade trying to get others to follow this law then he should be following every law pertaining to him. It's the pot calling the kettle black kind of thing......cb1000rider wrote:What does that have to do with anything? Pick any group of people - bicyclist, motorcyclists, truck drivers.. However, it does sound like the attitude of someone who mounts a 3 foot horizontal pole on his vehicle.jmra wrote:Actually it has nothing whatsoever to do with me.android wrote:YOU are the most important person in the country and the rest of us should never forget that.

Now that's a thought. I could mount a 3 ft pole to the side of my truck to help me gauge the distance. I'm sure I'd only hit a few before I got it right. (of course my response is tongue in check).gringo pistolero wrote:However, it does sound like the attitude of someone who mounts a 3 foot horizontal pole on his vehicle.jmra wrote:Actually it has nothing whatsoever to do with me.android wrote:YOU are the most important person in the country and the rest of us should never forget that.
Here's my ride. I think cyclists will give me 3 ft clearance.

It annoys most of us that cyclists run stop signs, red lights and other dangerous activity and we eventually get the blame for hitting them. Austin passed the three foot law and one road I use in commuting has a five foot bike lane with a white stripe demarking their lane. Unfortunately many of these bikers ride right on the stripe.
