Scary, Jim. ;-)

I'm a "no" on the memorization. I don't have enough gray cells to go around as it is. But I do have all my guns' serial numbers--and a bunch of other stuff--recorded on my password-protected BlackBerry (10 incorrect password attempts, and all the data is wiped). If I lose the BBerry in a theft, then I'll have to wait until I get to its backup data on my work computer, or get home where I have everything recorded. If both those sources are inaccessible, I'll have to get my safety deposit box where I have the backups of my home PC's data.
Not something I do on purpose, it mostly just happens, I also know my IL DL number, my IL FOID number and a variety of others. I used to run into people whose phones I had installed or worked on and be able to identify them by their phone number.

I carry too many different guns to memorize the serial numbers. I record them of course at the time of purchase. But no, I gave up trying to memorize them all after I bought the fourth carry gun. The guns stay secured in the safe if they aren't on my person. I'm generally not worried about having to recall the serial number from memory.
When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

Heck, I still remember the serial number off the M1 assigned to me in R.O.T.C. exhibition drill team back in high school. Kinda something that was drilled in my head and I still do it to this day. I think I memorized that # to my 92FS the first day I got it

As we get older, the brain cells become more valuable and we have to pick and choose how many are going to be used. I remember my girlfriend's phone number from 35 years ago, but have difficulty now days with my own phone number. Generally speaking, if I have it written down somewhere it does not get memorized and firearms are added to my written inventory at purchase.

I dont remember numbers very well sometimes. So for me just remembering my own cell number is all I can do some days. I have the numbers loged on my computer. I guess that I need to put a copy of that on my cell phone so that I can get to it at anytime if not at home.

Much like Jim, I have a mind that soaks up numbers. I do have my smaller carry pistol's number memorized... easily done because the serial number is matched on one of the magazines for it, so I see it all the time at the range when reloading and it's stuck in my head.

I've only read the serial on my regular carry gun 2 or 3 times, and it's not stamped in large enough numbers anywhere on the gun to make it conspicuous enough to see unless you're looking for it. I can only remember the first 3 numbers of it offhand right now. Now I'm gonna have to actually go look at it so I'll remember it. ;-)

EDIT: Just read the serial. It's now in the ol' memory banks. It's an easy one... a visually-appealing (to me) 6-digit number. My memory for numbers is visual... something about the image of the number and where it is on the object is what sticks in my head. It's the same with passages in books. If it's something I remember, generally I can tell you which page in relation to the binding (left or right) it's on, and what area of the page it's located. Yeah, I'm a nerd.

All this reminds me that I have a hard enough time keeping up with who makes my guns, much less their serial numbers. This kinda flew under the radar, so I don't know if you saw that Cerberus Capital Management--the same firm that recently acquired Chrysler from Daimler-Chrysler--has purchased Remington Arms for an estimated $370 million. Cerberus also purchased Bushmaster not long ago.

Makes you wonder about a new marketing ploy: the Chrysler Defender...a pickup with a built-in, full-length console safe for quick access to your Remington 870 12-gauge and handgun, another safe mounted flush in the ceiling for your Bushmaster M4, carry slots for your tactical flashlights and extra ammo, optional factory installed ceramic armor plating in the door panels and firewall, special lighting package including remote controlled spotlights and, of course, a reinforced frame with a ramming cage on the front.

Just kidding; just kidding... (Not about Remington being purchased, though.)

No. They are written on the purchase paperwork in each box/case they came in.

You guys are reminding me of this story.
Two elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other, "Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?"

"Outstanding," Fred replied. "They taught us all the latest psychological techniques -- visualization, association -- it made a huge difference for me."

"That's great! What was the name of the clinic?"

Fred went blank. He thought and thought, but couldn't remember.

Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, "What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?"

"You mean a rose?"

"Yes, that's it!" He turned to his wife. . ."Rose, what was the name of that clinic?"
(Oh, and yes -- before I left the store, because numbers stick with me.)
