Quoting that article:
Rising Democratic star and gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis has joined her top Republican rival in supporting a proposed "open carry" law. It would allow people with concealed handgun licenses to wear a pistol on their hip, in full view, while in public.
The phrase "has joined her top Republican rival" means that HE was already in favor of it, and she his riding his shirttails on this issue.......not because she favors OC, but because she sees it as a winning cause which will make her seem more centrist.

In the meantime, she gets along famously with Joe Strauss and other politicians who will make sure that OC will never get to her desk for signature if she's elected.......so there is no risk of her having to violate whatever she has that passes for principles.
