Today is Elvis Presley's birthday. He would have been 79 years old today.
Not my favorite Elvis song, but one of his most famous.

Wild bill,
Nice. Thanks. Want to hear another female with some real talent? KT Tunstall doing Black Horse and the Cherry Tree. Keep in mind everything you hear on the song is her. She is using a looping pedal to record various parts and plays along with herself.

For those of us who's sticks are a little older, composer Steve Young's 1969 recording from his album "Rock Salt and Nails":jminn1 wrote:Eagles "Seven Bridges Road" for those of us from the sticks...

Mike Nesmith(the Monkee who could play his instrument)is an interesting study. His mother, Bette, was the author of a real life rags to riches story: Divorced, single mom, working as a clerical temp, invents typing correction fluid(Liquid Paper), becomes multi-millionaire.
While best known for his run with the Monkees, Nesmith also had a mildly successful writing career producing hits for The Stone Poneys, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Monkee's, and Run-DMC.
The first Grammy Award for Video of the Year was won by Nesmith in 1981 for his hour long vid "Elephant Parts". His video production company, Pacific Arts Corporation, was an early producer of video content for home VCRs and has worked with many well known film makers such as Ken Burns.
His post-Monkees charting tune "Joanne" w/First National Band, is considered one of, if not the first, recordings in the "Country Rock" genre,
with Orville "Red" Rhodes on steel:
If you ever wondered about the occasionally odd lyric as Ms. Ronstadt vocalized, take another listen:
Ms. Ronstadt's voice has always captivated me; pure, rich, great depth.

I have good memories of Different Drum. I was working in a restaurant as a dishwater/busboy. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of working in the kitchen.

I was acquainted with Ms. Ronstadt as a "Ute". Our families shared area, industry and ethnic backgrounds and moved in similar social circles. Her move to Los Angeles at the tender age of 18 was quite daring in the early 60's and was the subject of much discussion among those of us who chafed at the limits we felt our community unjustly imposed upon us and cheered her, as well as by those older members who were scandalized by it.WildBill wrote:Don't forget movie producer of Repo Man.Dadtodabone wrote:Mike Nesmith(the Monkee who could play his instrument)is an interesting study.

Her subsequent success did in no small part provide impetus, and argumentative support for, my own departure from the Grand Canyon State a few years later.

I just read that Linda Ronstadt has Parkinson's and can't sing any more. Very sad.Dadtodabone wrote:I was acquainted with Ms. Ronstadt as a "Ute". Yes it is.WildBill wrote: I just read that Linda Ronstadt has Parkinson's and can't sing any more. Very sad.
All my favorite female artists, Linda Ronstadt, Bev Bivens, Emmylou Harris, Judith Durham and Grace Slick are in their late sixties or early seventies. All are dealing with the with health related issues of some sort. Just a shame.
And yes, I know that they are all petite brunettes with dimples and big voices. My wife(who shares those attributes)pointed out my mania to me decades ago, lol.
