Police believe the same BG has done this twice.

If you watch the video, he walks away holding the gun in a way that suggests that he may have not had any bullets in it.

Is there a safe way to use an ATM or just safer times and locations? It doesn't seem to be any safer to use the ATM in a drive thru either. Whenever I use the ATM I feel like I have a bullseye on my back. I hate it. I just try to use the ATM on base.
If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you carry a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?

As I have opined many times, we are never more exposed than when we have our backs turned to the world loading groceries, etc. in our vehicles in a parking lot....and/or at an ATM machine, etc. En Garde!

He's going to run into the wrong person sooner or later and that will be the end of that.

Same here! I never use the walk up machines and when I use the drive up machines I leave my car in drive and keep my foot firmly on the brake so I don't accidentally roll forward. I watch for anyone walking towards my vehicle and if I see anyone walking up, I hit cancel and drive off.

The drive through ATM that I use has a good field of view. I don't use the one nearest my house because it's on the side of the bank building so there's two blind corners way too close for comfort.

Time and location are definitely factors for my walk up ATM use. I don't worry too much using the machine inside our office building during work hours. I'm still aware of my surroundings but the risk is low enough I don't feel like I need overwatch.

Another good idea is to do your ATM transactions during the day. Both of these assaults were at 9pm.

My wife and I never use an ATM. Don't have an ATM card and have no interest in getting one.

After dark, suck up the extra fees and go INTO a convenience store, or go into a grocery store and buy something small and get cash back. At least that way it's well lit and there are other people around.

At least two banks I know of reimburse ATM fees monthly and you can use any ATM in the world, free.

Those two would be USAA Federal Savings Bank and Charles Schwab Bank.

I have been astonished, since I moved here, at how little "walking around" money I use. Of course, I don't do much "walking around" these days, I guess. I used to draw $200 at least weekly and sometimes several times a week. Now, those $20 bills stay in my pocket long enough to get warm. I last stopped at an ATM machine early December. USAA and Schwab are saving a fortune!
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
