Every local airport has its own security arrangement with local police to some type of contract security force," said J. David Cox Sr., president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents the screeners. "There is no standardization throughout the country. Every airport operates differently.

I'm very sorry for the loss of the TSA agent in LAX. It is a tragedy. I support having proper security in place.

The paradox for me is that when the NRA made a similar proposal for schools after Sandy Hook, they were vilified. The teachers unions were nowhere to be found.

"As with any incident of this nature, there will be an appropriate time — after all the facts have been gathered and thoughtfully analyzed —to review existing policy and procedure to see what, if anything, can be learned from this unfortunate incident to help prevent future tragedies," said Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., who chairs the Homeland Security Committee.

Geez. And all of the politicians who jumped immediately on the Sandy Hook tragedy didn't follow Senator Carper's advice. What a surprise.

While that would be true it doesn't really give an accurate big picture. If they do end up being armed then they would likely take the place of armed security and police that are already employed at airports which are already a bizarre mix of airport police, airport security, security that works for airport police, contract security, security that works for individual entities at the airport, local and federal authorities and of course TSA. Remember after 9/11 when they armed every INS person in the airport? You had grandmothers that had been checking passports for 20 years (and I'm sure they did a great job) without ever touching a gun suddenly armed and protecting people. They went from clerks to cops overnight.

Well the checkpoint that was manned was not covered by leos at the time of the shooting. They previously always had an armed presences but they changed manning procedures which left the checkpoint uncovered. What the real issue will likely be is if that will continue or will it become standard to have some armed presence at any TSA checkpoint. As to the quality of officers it always goes back to money. At the low rate TSA starts their officers at you won't get and keep many good people. If they arm and increase pay for some they will have the ability to hire and retain better people. The thing may be that TSA may not want to rely on others to provide that coverage because right now there is no way for them to mandate that there are other Leo's to provide them coverage. If they have their own armed officers then that would put the matter in their own hands not someone elses. Honestly if you payed cops 12-14 an hour how good would they be?

I'm surprised that the TSA agents aren't already armed....esp. considering how many guns they've been caught stealing out of people's luggage....

That statement appears to be his intent. But, if you listen to his words he is describing the 2nd Amendment and the general populace. I realize he would rather have a force, larger than the Army, of goons dedicated to himself or his party, policing the U.S.
