school student pulls trigger on police rifle
I did a search and didn't see this posted.
S. California elementary school student pulls trigger on police rifle, 3 kids hurt by shrapnel
The AR-15 was locked to the side of the motorcycle that was on display at Newman Elementary School

The internal memo will go something like this:VoiceofReason wrote:I did a search and didn't see this posted.

Dear Chief:
The reason I thought it would be a good idea to keep a chambered round in my AR on my motorcycle with the safety off while displaying said motorcycle at an elementary school is because.....(here's where the hard part starts.)
It will take more than the usual amount of law enforcement creativity and ingenuity to complete that sentence.

Teacher: Children, tomorrow we are going to have a police officer in class to talk about why you should never use drugs.
Class: NO, NO, please no, we will be good. Please don’t have another police officer here!!!!!

If the trigger was exposed the safety may have been exposed too. It's entirely possible that the kid (or one of the kids) switched the safety off.Excaliber wrote:The internal memo will go something like this:VoiceofReason wrote:I did a search and didn't see this posted.

That doesn't excuse the officer (or the teacher) for not monitoring the kids as they explored the bike, but the story didn't really give enough details to pass judgement.

Yes, it's possible a child moved the safety lever. That's the minor point. What was a round doing in the chamber during routine patrol?tallmike wrote:If the trigger was exposed the safety may have been exposed too. I concur, and adults should be assesed before they can breed.E.Marquez wrote:Clearly children should be registered, restricted and or outlawed.
Carry safe and carry when and where you can. I'm just sayin'.
Re: school student pulls trigger on police rifle
I have problems with the police department and the officer. When you have your equipment on display or it is unattended in public the firearm should be safe. By safe in that situation it must unloaded. There is no excuse for it to be otherwise.

I wonder if he pulled mag and didn't think to clear the chamber?

Obviously it was because the magazine held more than five rounds and it had a button to easily release it. I am sure the civilian version would have been much safer.

In that case, firearms safety is not second nature to the officer. Anyone whose job requires them to carry firearms should not even have to think about firearms safety. He/She should practice it until becomes a habit he/she does without even thinking.jmra wrote:I wonder if he pulled mag and didn't think to clear the chamber?
If I were that officer’s supervisor, until such time as he was retrained in gun safety, he would be issued one bullet which he must keep in his shirt pocket.
