Gun free zone signs?
Forgive me I searched but it seems most everyone on here has got this down but me, I noticed in threads asking for apps that show 30.06 places that people mentioned "no but it shows gun buster places and gun free zone signs"... I thought those were useless signs and meant nothing to us? So why bother noticing them?

Some people don't want to financially support antigun fanatics who post signs proclaiming their intolerance.
I sincerely apologize to anybody I offended by suggesting the Second Amendment also applies to The People who don't work for the government.

Most sensible people realize that these signs are intended for criminals carrying illegally and if you have a CHL to ignore them.

Re: Gun free zone signs?
Gun buster and no guns signs are meaningless to a CHL in Texas, but they may be a valid sign in other states for CHL. So, in Texas there is http://www.texas3006.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that allows people to post locations with valid or non-valid 30.06 signs or 51% locations. An app that would list a gun buster or no-guns sign would be worthless really in Texas.TrackinPat wrote:Forgive me I searched but it seems most everyone on here has got this down but me, I noticed in threads asking for apps that show 30.06 places that people mentioned "no but it shows gun buster places and gun free zone signs"... I've just never understood the logic behind this.... When it comes down to it and the reason that NO type of laws or gun regulations will stop or even curb criminals is that by definiton criminals are people who BREAK THE LAW......
"Our houses are protected by the Good Lord and a gun, you might em both if you show up here not welcome son" Josh Thompson- Way out here (best song ever) "eventually all citizens will become criminals with enough legislation....."

You are absolutely right and I agree with you. But doesn't the logic behind the whole thought process seem more than a little bizarre.jmra wrote:Most sensible people realize that these signs are intended for criminals carrying illegally and if you have a CHL to ignore them.
The old saying says "locks keep honest people honest." I've always figured this meant that by not making it very easy for someone who had light fingers to get them around something that didn't belong to them, a possible crime was averted. The lock becomes a physical barrier, though not a particularly tough one for a determined thief.
So who is the real target audience of the gun buster sign? And exactly what could its deterrent effect be? How many people who stuff a hand gun under their shirt will be persuaded not to walk into the building that has a gun buster sign? It is a very far stretch to suggest that, like a lock, it is going to keep honest people honest. The lock prevents possible crime. By the time that an unlicensed person who is carrying a hand gun sees the sign, a crime has already been committed and all that remains is to see how many additional charges (like armed robbery) might be added. Perhaps it is only a future deterrent, to those who were pondering carrying an unlicensed handgun? I suspect that some otherwise law abiding citizens do carry unlicensed firearms but the thought of them being driven from their "evil" ways by a gunbuster sign seems pretty laughable.
My take is that those signs are aimed not at criminals or maybe even potential criminals but at law abiding citizens. The store thinks that the sign has magical powers to control people who enter the building, even CHLs who know that no such magical powers exist through that sign. So, except for the rare occasion when I have no other options, I assume that any no gun sign is aimed at me is there because the business who posted it doesn't want me there. It is not a legal statement but a political one. I just silently take my business elsewhere.

Re: Gun free zone signs?
The specific wording of 30.06 signs is prescribed by statue in Texas. But, to say that other signage not specifically adhering to the letter of the law can be completely disregarded is bad advice. There is competing verbiage in the Texas Statutes that say one must only provide verbal or written instruction that guns are not allowed and the failure to leave or enter with regard for those instructions would be trespass. Some discussion recently in the CHL instructors renewal class to that point. The advice of the State was this: "Use your best personal judgement." It was pointed out that "effective notice" and "notice" are not the same. For a sign to meet the requirements for "effective notice" it must be on contrasting background, 1" block letters, bi-lingual. That is for "effective notice." HOWEVER, "notice" can be as simple as a handwritten sign saying "no guns allowed." A jury of reasonable people would then determine if "notice" was given, and violated.
So, contrary to all the legalistic advice I've received over the years, coupled with a sincere desire NOT be become an expensive test case, if the message is clear---my gun stays out.

Re: Gun free zone signs?
IANAL but "written notice" is specifically defined as a 30.06 sign. No other written sign is a valid substitute.

I think sensible people would conclude the signs are directed at the law abiding because criminals who don't obey the law are not going to be deterred by a sign either.jmra wrote:Most sensible people realize that these signs are intended for criminals carrying illegally and if you have a CHL to ignore them.

You are definitely intitled to your opinion. Still doesn't change the fact that the signs mean nothing legally to a CHL holder.tbrown wrote:I think sensible people would conclude the signs are directed at the law abiding because criminals who don't obey the law are not going to be deterred by a sign either.jmra wrote:Most sensible people realize that these signs are intended for criminals carrying illegally and if you have a CHL to ignore them.
