Hunt ISD teachers can now carry

#1

Post by johncanfield »

Hunt is in the Kerrville area. Good for you guys! :thumbs2: :txflag: :hurry: (Not sure if this was posted already)

HUNT — Hunt School teachers will now be allowed to carry firearms on campus with permission from the Hunt Independent School District board of trustees. During the meeting Thursday, the board approved the drafted policy 4-3, allowing teachers to carry handguns on campus, effective immediately.

Schreiner University shooting team coach Bill Thomas, who is offering free Concealed Handgun License lessons for Hunt teachers, was pleased the board of trustees approved the measure, saying that allowing Hunt ISD’s staff members to carry firearms is the best way to ensure children’s safety in school.

Wish this would happen at my school I work for. I don't ever see it happening because my school can afford to hire LEOs for security.

Of course Harrold ISD is the grand-daddy of them all on this, but these are others I have noticed along the way.

This article on Brenham Brenham ISD considering 'Angel Guardian' program allowing guns in classrooms states that "Currently there are around 70 other school districts in Texas using a similar plan" but it does not list them. The ones I have verified with a news article or statement on the school website are below.

A Wall Street Journal article of 8/25/14 states "At least 78 of Texas' 1,024 districts have reported adopting a "school guardian" plan in which designated staff are authorized to carry a gun, up from one district before Sandy Hook, according to the Texas Association of School Boards."

It includes this interesting quote:
David Thweatt, superintendent of Harrold Independent School District, a 125-student district in North Texas, said the state's marshal program has too many precautions, including a rule that requires certain marshals to keep their guns in a "locked and secured safe."

"That's almost like saying you can have a car but the engine has to be out," Mr. Thweatt said, whose district was the first in Texas to adopt a guardian plan almost seven years ago.

Childress ISD
"A press release from [Texas State Representative Drew] Springer’s office says that other school districts in HD68 plan to enact similar policies in the coming months."
I have since read another article, which unfortunately I lost track of, that indicates that Childress's plan is to lock up the guns somewhere on campus and not actually allow staff to carry them. If true this is nearly useless.

Cleburne school trustees decide not to arm educators
The school board president said he was in favor of allowing staff with CHLs to carry, but a community survey went against it so he decided to go along with it. Interestingly the parents of elementary students voted in favor of it by 53%, but elementary teachers still don't get to carry.
A few months later Cleburne did change policy to allow those employees with CHLs to keep handguns in their cars in the parking lot, but "Trustees unanimously approved the policy change, provided that it is made clear to employees that guns will not be allowed on their person for any reason..

Lewisville ISD ""I think our teachers are there to educate and not to panic and put themselves in that type of position," said Board Member Kathy Duke." Officials also state the no local chief supports allowing teachers to be armed.

Glen Rose ISD "{Superintendent} Rotan said he firmly supports the idea that hiring highly-trained educators to work in classrooms and leaving the patrolling of campuses in the hands of highly-trained law enforcement officials. Also cites law enforcement opposition.

Thanks! I did. ;-)

Interesting find: I did a search to see if I could find a news article about Quanah's policy, but the only thing that popped up was this page: NCCISD School Safety and Security, which is on the website of the Nueces Canyon Consolidated ISD. The only thing on the page is a series of .pdfs of news articles about OTHER schools that have adopted concealed-carry-for-teachers policies. I am puzzled tho, because there is no article about Nueces Canyon's own policy on the issue anywhere on the website, either for or against, and I could not find anything by googling. So I put them in the "maybe" category.

This is great - I hadn't realized this many school districts had overcome hoplophobia.

One private school in Lubbock, Trinity Christian School, has allowed teachers with a license to carry a concealed handgun for a couple of years, and others are considering it.

I added Harmony to the "maybe" list, because I can find news articles that say the school board is considering it, but can't find any that say they approved it. Do you have a reference?

While I was at it I discovered that Westwood ISD moved from "maybe" to "approved," so updated my list accordingly. Also added Cayuga ISD to the "approved" list. ;-)
