I realize how threatening a 96 year old man, near invalid, with a UTI can be. :nono:
Until we stop the militarization of our local PD's these kind of instances will continue.
Thanks for the post, but, I'm kind of sorry I read this article. Prayers for this mans family.

I doubt the suicide by cop. Some people just don’t like hospitals or nursing homes and at age 95 he did not believe surgery for a UTI was in his best interest. His life, his call.

My mother was that way, she did not wish to have “life saving” techniques used to extend her life. After she had a stroke she gave up and since she had advanced directives there was nothing I could do but bring her home and tend to the end of her life. Had cops shown up demanding she go the hospital for treatment or they would kill her, she would have been killed not in a suicide attempt, but an attempt to live out her life with the dignity and manner she wanted.

Paramedics told police that he was threatening them with a metal shoehorn and a knife but the family contests the claim of a knife. I can’t imagine employing a tazer and 12 gage bean bag for a guy just waving a shoehorn around. Then again, the cops show up in riot gear, guess they wanted a riot.
