Newbie in the pre waiting room

#1

Post by dozerboy »

Hello,
I have been reading on this site for about 12hrs since yesterday and my head hurts so figured I it was time to join. I 'm 24 live in Socal with my fiancée but we will be moving to Houston soon. I was born in TX grew up in the Midwest moved several times since I was 18. I'm a heavy equipment operator as my name suggest. My fiancée and I have come to realize we both enjoy shooting a lot since she took at shooting class. I know very little about handguns and have only shot them a hand full of times, but have been an avid hunter since I was knee high to a grasshopper. We plan on getting our CCs when we move to TX and I at least might join the IDPA.

One thing I'm unclear on is if I'm going to have a problem getting my CC at 15 I was convicted of a crime (read felony) as a minor, but only had a few minor traffic tickets since. Do I have anything to worry about?

Next are there any threads that have some very good info that I may have missed while browsing? Especially that pertain to choosing the right handgun and cal. for myself other then comfort (not sure what to look for) I'm 5'11 @ ~135lbs.

Oh and do ya all have an acronyms list some of these have got me lost?

Welcome Dozerboy! Can't give a comment on the conviction, but I hope for the best! I'm sure some one will chime in. As far as the weapon--they don't come in sizes to fit you. Go to a range where you can rent handguns, and shoot them all. Go to a gun store or show, and handle all of them. Find one that just feels good. I love larger calibers and have a .40, a .45, and a .357. However, one of the world's most effective counter terrorism units carries Beretta .22 autos as a primary. Whatever works for you, just check them all out. Good Luck!!
I found the Lord again--although he never lost me!

Hello, dozerboy.

I suggest you read the following thread in its entirety. You might have to wait a year or two until ten years have elapsed if you received deferred adjudication.

Don't assume you are automatically permanently disqualified. I almost did, and would have resented it for a long while!

Dozerboy,
Welcome aboard & you should get some answers on your Q from some of the legals on the board.
No official list of acronyms. Those you do not know, ask.
This is a place you will not be flamed or made fun of.
I have been shooting for over 40 yrs but on the internet for only a few. When I joined I was in the same shape on knowing the abreviations.
Here you will find help.
Glad to have you.

Dozerboy,
Welcome to the forum.
I think that ten years have to pass on a felony conviction of a minor, but someone more knowledgable than me will be around shortly to confirm or refute.

Even if you have to wait, have your fiancee get hers as soon as she can.

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know the answer to your question. The people who are likely to know aren't posting much at the moment.

Do you have paperwork from your legal case? You will need a certified copy of the final disposition. If a defense attorney handled your case, he should be able to tell you how to get it.

If you pass an NICS check, that's a good sign; but it does not guarantee that you will be able to get a CHL.

Unless certified as an adult, a juvenile is adjudicated as having engaged in delinquent conduct and as long as it has been over 10 years ago it's OK.

If you get the documentation now and send it with your application, that will probably be the end of the matter. Otherwise you may get a nastygram from DPS and have to get the documentation later.

I didn't send a copy of my dispostition through sheer ignorance. However, I strongly suspect that my juvenile history was not even checked since I am 32 and it would have had to have been more than ten years after any juvenile mischief. This will not apply to you, though, if this is true.

Welcome to the forum.... The people on here are extremely helpful and will answer almost all of your questions. Elgato and Charles L Cotton will be your best bet for info on this. Elgato was my CHL instructor. He is a wealth of information.

WELCOME - Great to hear from you.

Hope you get the answers you need. I to, had an issue before submitting an application.
DPS in Austin settled my inquiry and off I went.
Your selection of guns will be easy. You will get what you want .
Need has nothing to do with it.
Holsters are another story! So get ready to pick, choose, and BUY.
Again, need has nothing to do with it. Get what you want.
Good Luck. :txflag:
