Are Guns the Problem?

Every time there's a shooting tragedy, there are more calls for gun control. Let's examine a few historical facts. By 1910, the National Rifle Association had succeeded in establishing 73 NRA-affiliated high-school rifle clubs. The 1911 second edition of the Boy Scout Handbook made qualification in NRA's junior marksmanship program a prerequisite for obtaining a BSA merit badge in marksmanship. In 1918, the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. established its own Winchester Junior Rifle Corps. The program grew to 135,000 members by 1925. In New York City, gun clubs were started at Boys, Curtis, Commercial, Manual Training and Stuyvesant high schools. With so many guns in the hands of youngsters, did we see today's level of youth violence?

Not at all. Almost every truck in the high school parking lot had gun racks full of guns, mine included. Most racks held two guns. I haven't seen or thought about these gun racks for a long time.

And every guy and some girls wore Buck knives on their belts. The only injuries I recall were self inflicted from fooling around after lunch.

Completely forgot about the bone handled Buck Knives with really long blades and wearing camouflage to go straight to the woods after school.
If a crowd was gathering around a tailgate it usually meant a new gun or nice rack was at hand and everyone was checking it out, teachers included. We sure had a lot of show and tell in that parking lot with guns. Springwater on a Friday night in a milk jug was cool too and nobody ever shot anyone by accident. Things sure have changed.

Rifle and/or shotgun in the gun rack, knife on the belt, rope in the tool box and even a fishing pole in case the hunting wasn't any good.

Do that now and you are thrown in jail and called a terrorist.

I haven't even seen a rifle rack for a truck in several years. I miss the "good ol' days"

All of this. I was on my high school skeet team and brought two shotguns to school on every Friday. Maybe, just maybe it's time to put prayer back in schools and hopefully if it's not too late, give the parents and teachers the tools back to show the youth the way. (paddles) when needed, quickly solve and turn a youngsters mind. A little hard love cures the desire to do wrong when consequences are looming.

You guys must be pretty young. Nobody ever heard of camouflage, or Buck knives, in my hs days. Everyone carried a knife of some kind. Mine was a pocket knife my granddad gave me when I was 10. Still have it, of course. We were lucky to have two pair of jeans mostly. Back then folks had to ride ON Mustangs, not in one. There weren't any from Ford yet. I think the first ones were 1963.5's.

I grew up in the 80's. No one had guns, but folding knives were common. Most guys at least had hunted or shot guns at home, except for some who lived in town.
