Hopefully we will all say a prayer for this young guy and his family. I know that we are not as close knit as a law enforcement agency, or even just a common work place but he was one of us, in a way. This could happen to anyone. If indeed he didn't think he had a choice I'm glad he went down fighting and didn't just sit there and take a bullet. This reminds me that I need to be practicing BOTH conflict de-escelation, as well as gun grabs. I used to practice both a lot when I worked in law enforcement, and have not sense. As for not carrying one in the chamber and racking one in when you pull sorry man but that's just not good tactics. Yes it used to be the norm for the military but it's not anymore and there is a reason for that. If you don't trust the safety on your weapon it's time to get a new one. I carry a 1911, Sig SAO, as well as Glocks, and XDs all with a round in the chamber; cocked, locked and ready to rock. Your time to be able to draw, as well as fine motor skills to rack a slide upon drawing may be compromised in a shooting situation, and I would hate to see something like this happen to a fellow member here on the board because he was doing something that need not be done. Having said all that I'm saddened that the young life of an apparently honest citizen was cut short by a crook, and I hope they catch the guy and I hope he gets the death pennalty. It's a reminder though that life is terminal, but sometimes our own termination is optional.
My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.
From the context of the articles, it has me wondering if the BG's knew the CHL was armed.
I certainly hope the CHL didn't tell them he was armed.

Let's say we get into this situation. We make a few bad moves, don't use situational awareness, etc. We have a gun to our face and someone is asking for our wallet.
What do you do?
1) Common sense says don't pull and fire. The odds are against it that one could get the weapon out and put rounds in the attacker before the attacker fires a shot.
2) Pull a Collateral, grab the arm and push to the right (with left hand), while moving torso to left while using right hand to get weapon and fire. Odds are the guy is going to shoot you to remove all witnesses anyways, might as well try your luck to take him with you or possibly live.
I am interested to know what you guys have to say.

In most circumstances, I would look as much like a compliant victim to take his guard down and get to my weapon.
If the fight is already on and my weapon isn't drawn, I'll do the best I can.
It really just depends on the situation.

From a description I read on Houston Comical, it sounds as if perp came up and asked question to distract victim and then produced weapon and shot him without any warning... tough one to avoid unless you DON'T let your guard down a mm and maintain distance/cover possiblilty.
There are several tactics that give you a chance against gun in face situation based upon total situation like 1 or more perps etc.
In basic "He Homey" Collateral situation, what was depicted in movie is probably best, 1. try and blade weapon away from BG, 2. distract BG mentally or physically (blubbering and pleading works good, saying "Here Take my wallet" while accessing weapon at 4 oclock might work, tossing/dropping wallet or money roll to ground) 3. if close enough affect BGs weapon arm (bat away, grab and push or lift, anything that moves muzzle off you) while 4. Draw and fire from retention (arm locked to side or "from the hip") into center of mass

Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.
This is something that I've thought of a lot. I've taken up keeping my wallet in my front left pocket. Makes it easier to fumble with and drop, I keep my weapon on the right hip. The idea is to present my front left while quartering the right side away and blocking the BG's view while drawing. One tactic that can work is where a CHL offers up his money, maybe fumbles it and drops in on the ground, then uses the 'opening' to draw and shoot.
pocket holster. You put yer hand in yer pocket to remove yer wallet; keep the shirttail low so it covers yer draw. once you clear yer pocket, point shoot. this would be presuming the BG is close enough to just fill up your sight radius. LaserGrip would be beneficial, too, I would think.
I read something about this in one of those Defensive Handgun-type meags.
the writer would carry a pocket-protector in his right sweatshirt pocket. he could put his hand in there and point the pistol straight ahead effectively.
I dunno, juss an idear!
