New Gander Mountain in Round Rock, TX

Round Rock, TX, is just north of Austin. They just opened this past Tuesday, Aug. 27 - I first heard about their new store from radio ads last week, and they've been running TV commercials too.

I've been a GM customer since they had their original mail order business in Wilmot, WI . . . .it must be over 40 years ago now; as a young'un, my Dad and I even drove up there from Chicago a couple of times when they started over the counter sales of reloading components. They began opening retail stores some years later, and eventually took over the Burger Bros. chain in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area where I was working at the time. Went through some re-orgs as I recall, but have been off my radar since I moved to TX in the '90s.

They took over the building that used to be Sportsman's Warehouse. It's about what you'd expect from Gander Mountain, but the whole back of the store is their gun shop, with plenty of rifles, pistols, shotguns, EBR's, safes, a couple of .50s, even some used guns and milsurps. Prices seemed rather high - they had about 5 dozen Mosin-Nagants for $180 each, a Chiappa Rhino (1st I've seen) for almost a grand. Also looked at a scaled down Browning 1911 in .22 LR . . . nice little gun, but at nearly $600, I figured it wouldn't do anything better than the .22s I've got now.

Centerfire ammo was AVAILABLE . . . at a price. Examples: 1000 round cases of Federal AR223 for ~$600, 350 round boxes of CCI Blazer Brass 9mm for ~$120, as well as bulk packs of .380, .40, and .45 ACP. The only common round they DIDN'T have was .22lr, other than birdshot.

Heard from a friend at the new store they opened this weekend in Lewisville that prices were not in line with other stores locally. It seemed that they had plenty of ammo, but were charging a premium for it.

We went on Saturday, just to look. They seemed to have a nice selection, although I'm not up on prices to speak to those. They weren't aware of the XDs recall, or so said the guy behind the counter (they had at least one in the case).

Didn't make any gun-related purchases, but we were excited to find they sell replacement latches for our cooler (the kids broke it a while back and we thought we'd have to replace the whole thing). Also found a good deal on kid-sized camp chairs and a couple other items we wanted for an upcoming camping trip. Employees were easy to find and very helpful.

They have a ton of brand new fat 50 ammo cans for 20 bucks.

Ammo prices seemed kind of high, although I got 100 rounds of CCI 22 mag for 12 bucks.

You know how I can tell their ammo prices are too high?

They have shelves and shelves of it (even with a 10 box limit.)

Even though they carry black powder supplies, they still didn't have percussion caps which are the only thing I still need to shoot my muzzle loader I inherited from my grandfather.

I took a trip out there, I asked about reloading components and they said the store was too small to offer them. They did have tumblers and media but that's it.
I talked to a guy behind the counter and he said they planned on having a Grand Opening soon. He also said they had pallet(s) of .22 in the back but weren't allowed to put it on the shelves yet. Maybe it's being held for the Grand Opening.
Ammo prices were high, shotgun ammo was reasonable, however.

My dad went yesterday. He thought the prices were better than academy. He saw a Remington box of 50 9mm for $62 in temple. Bought same box at cabelas a few weeks ago for $32. He got the 350 rounds of blazer. Said the workers were extremely polite and answered questions he had about a few firearms like they wanted to help. He has had a few people at academy make him feel customer service isn't a priority anymore.

I know an FFL that's right at the Round Rock border that can probably find you good prices on stuff

The Bass Pro Shop will be about a 104,000 square foot store and include a bowling alley. (???) Gander's new store is just over 50,000 square feet, and the Cabela's in Buda is 185,000 square feet, bigger than BPS and GM put together.

I took a trip out there, I asked about reloading components and they said the store was too small to offer them. They did have tumblers and media but that's it . . .

And yet Sportsman's Warehouse had a decent selection of reloading supplies when they were in the same building . . .

Good point! They probably have a clothing line the size of Cabela's in Buda. The whole back wall is guns plus it wraps around the side walls a bit. But I don't know why they couldn't fit a section of reloading components, I guess they want the best chance they can to sell their overpriced ammo.

It's been many years since I've been to a Gander Mountain. Made the trip to Round Rock today and it was just as I recall. Over priced and limited selection. Employees were helpful.
