Re: One song that "speaks" to you
It's amazing how much he sounds like Roy Orbison! About 40 years ago, there was a singer named Ben Reece that sang in small Houston clubs that sounded exactly like Willie Nelson. This is only the second time I've heard someone so close to the famous singer.WildBill wrote:Chris Isaak sings a Roy Orbison classic - "Only The Lonely"

Re: One song that "speaks" to you
Thanks Charles. I was lucky enough to see Roy Orbison is a small club {~200 people], in San Francisco, in the 80s. It was an amazing show to see him up close and sing his hits and sound like his records!Charles L. Cotton wrote:WildBill wrote:Chris Isaak sings a Roy Orbison classic - "Only The Lonely"

Chris Isaak also performs great covers of Elvis, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis songs. He is not just an imitator. but a genuine fan and steward of this type of music.

Bruce Springsteen inducted Roy Orbison into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In his speech, he shared his goals for when he made his album "Born to Run".AndyC wrote:I don't know - he sounds more like Elvis to me than Roy Orbison; guess I need better earmuffs, 'cos I'm not arguing with a Texan over country-style music
He said: "In 1975, when I went into the studio to record, Born To Run, I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector’s productions, but most of all I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison. Now, everybody knows that nobody sings like Roy Orbison."

The Movies! What other medium, for good or ill, has had a greater impact or defined these United States to the rest of the world for nearly a century? And right there with the "Pictures" was the musical soundtrack that helped stir your emotions.
The music set the mood for an extraordinary experience even before the show started.
In 1935 Alfred Newman composed what would become the most heard orchestral composition, Ever!
The 1954 addition to the original 10 second fanfare was added to cover the Cinemascope title and has remained a part ever since.
One of the great composers of Movie Music was Elmer Bernstein. From the "Ten Commandments" to "Ghostbusters" his film scores were nominated for Academy Awards 14 times, with a win for "Thoroughly Modern Millie", 2 Grammys and 2 Golden Globes.
What composition illustrates the duality of American nature more so than the theme for "The Magnificent Seven"?
Watching the Composer conduct an iconic piece of music is always a treat. The first trumpet is tremendous.
That his composition gained greater fame as the "Marlboro Cigarette Theme" doesn't lessen the impact it had on me as rode across the desert southwest with Yul Brenner, Steve McQueen and friends while comfortably seated in an air conditioned theatre in Phoenix.

That is a great movie theme song. Here's one from the movie Local Hero. It's not as majestic as The Magnificent Seven, but I like it. Mark Knopfler, from Dire Straits scored the soundtrack. BTW Local Hero is a great movie. There are a lot of funny moments.Dadtodabone wrote:The Movies! Helmut Lotti is a Belgian singer.
He sings in Dutch, Afrikaans, English, French, German, Russian, Ukrainian, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, and Spanish.
He started off, at an early age, as an Elvis imitator, but has had much success singing other material.
Imitator or not, he has a remarkable voice.
Here is covers the Elvis song "Are You Lonesome Tonight"
