Gun Storage - Need Help

#1

Post by magicglock »

I have a personal situation that requires that I remove all firearms from my possession. Without getting into too many details, I have an emotionally unstable drug dependent person in my home that should not have access to firearms. While seeking help for this individual I need to remove the guns from the house ASAP and need to be able for legal reasons to prove that I am not in possession and I do not have ready access to my guns. The obvious solution would be to sell them to an FFL but I have a substantial investment and do not want to part with my firearms. Is there somewhere in the DFW metroplex I can store my firearms and have proof of storage? I have my CHL and I am legally able to possess firearms but need to remove all possibility of others gaining access. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Pawn them. Up north it wasn't uncommon for people to "Pawn" their rifles between seasons so they would be locked and secure in the off season. You don't need to pawn full value, talk with the shop and figure an amount that the'll be happy with and doesn't cost you to much. You will have a record with the shop on every gun you own but if that's not an issue...

My other suggestion would be a gun range or club with an FFL could also provide storage , I know some do for type III weapons owned by members so why not other guns?

Maybe move your safe to a storage facility? Or to a friend's house?

New guy here to the forum, but I agree with this. Find a nice climate controlled storage facility and move your safe over.

Doesn't give much in the way of proof of storage if he can just walk in and get them tho.

Only if he has the key and the access code to the storage unit rented, I think the storage unit idea is good.

It does show in good faith that they were removed as well.

I would also take photos of the guns in the unit, as well as record (if you haven't already) all of the gun details

Make/model/serial number/caliber, etc

If he rented it who would think he didn't have access to it?

IDK I got the idea that the OP wanted something more than just a place to lock his guns away. He wanted conclusive proof that there was no access to guns at his house. I think to show that, and I don't know why he wants to show that or if it's something that really needs to be done, the guns need to be under someone else control. Locking them in a storage that he rented, that he has access to, maybe it's me but that doesn't seem to fit the bill. Now if he he gave the guns to someone else to secure and they got the storage? Perhaps one of those self storage containers. They drop off and you fill it up then they take it away. You wouldn't be able to get it back without delivery and paperwork showing it and you wouldn't have to worry about the transportation aspects.

No reason a combination lock couldn't be used on the storage unit. Then there is no physical "key" for someone to procure. Or the keys could be stored in a lockbox at the bank. The only other solution I can think of would be to contact a local gun dealer and see if he would be willing to hold them for a storage fee. I would figure you need to set out a timeline with them as well. No relatives? You could offer to purchase a new gunsafe for them, and when you get your firearms back, let them keep the safe for their troubles.

Look at the shooters club. They will store them for $10 / month or $85 / year. I have not used the service myself, but I shoot there sometimes.

You have to be a member but that is like 10 bucks or something stupid like that...

Cheapest method would be having a friend keep and store it for you in their safe. The next one would be renting a climate controlled storage space and keeping it in a safe there. The individual wont have access to it unless you give them access to it. I would NOT sell it, unless that was your only option.

I knew there had to be someplace. You can still have access and shoot when you want but also a record of where all your guns are.
Sounds like a winner if you don't have to many guns.

I think on the first quote I thought you were referring to the OP and I see that you probably meant the visitor. Now maybe I misread what the OP wants but it seemed to be more than just keeping the guns from the visitors hands to documenting that even he, the OP I mean, didn't have access to firearms. As such it seems to me the guns either need to be out of the control of the OP or have their location documented and secured the whole time that this is a concern.

We had a pipe burst and flooded the house a few yrs back. I took all the guns to a local dealer for cleaning, as they may have gotten wet--covered under insurance ;-) . I left them there during the repair period (about 90 days)--safe and sound while under "repair". Shop owner said he couldn't just store them.
