Word use that drives you up the wall!

Here's a list of pet-peeve pleonasms, from the Department of Redundancy Department. Not only are they redundancies that are strung together, but they also contain a bunch of words that are unnecessary:

-"Past history"
-"Pre-planning"
-"ATM machine"
-"End result"
-"Totally necessary"
-"Basic fundamentals"
-"Circulating around"
-"Close proximity"
-"Pair of twins"
-"Dual tandem"
-"Unsolved mystery"
-"True facts"
-"Rio Grande River"
-"Somewhat unique"

Some of these may be open for debate.

While we are at it, let's give a thought to these phrases and words:

"Chalant" (in case you really do care)
"I've told you a million times, stop exaggerating!"
"Half the lies we are told are untrue."
"It's deja vu all over again" - Yogi Berra
"When you hit a fork in the road, take it" - also Y.B.
"If we do not succeed, the risk of failure greatly increases."

The only one I would debate with you is the "dual tandem"...though I would say tandem duals. As in two dual axles mounted in tandem on a semi rig truck or trailer...the rest of them are worth a chuckle though...

2. "Peruse" means to read something deeply and thoroughly, not to simply skim over something. This word is in danger of becoming it's own antonym.

Interestng, like the word "cleave", as I understand it, is an antonym of itself.
: to adhere firmly and closely or loyally and unwaveringly
or
: to split especially along the grain

But to stay on topic, I hate the fact that lay, lie, laid are so difficult to place in a sentence (and layed is not a word?).

And again, if it wasn't clear before, I despise the misuse of the words fewer and less.

All firearms forums are loaded with cute words like "bang switch," "Winnie, or Shotty, or Remy, or Bushy, "pipe," and "clip" (unless you really mean a magazine loading device). The one phrase I hear, in person, at a range or gun shop that will have me eyeballing cover is, "I've been around guns all my life." BTW, gotta go now and get to my smith to have my roscoe repaired:

I have a few, but I usually don't comment on them irregardless of who their from....

You hit mine. "Unique" has also been one, but it's been mis-used so often, most dictionaries have given in on the definition. For years, it meant "one of a kind". There was not "very unique", either it was, or was not "one of a kind".

A somewhat related "fun signnature" in the computer world:

I hate when the word unique has a modifier. very unique, somewhat unique, pretty unique, etc. the word is like dead, either you are or you aren't

For some reason you hear this a lot in Humble, TX since they pronounce the word "umble". Just to annoy them I say Humble with the hard H.

Mrs Anygun has the habit of saying "umble" when she speaks of someone's virtue of humility.

Drives me up the wall but I let her off because she scares me.
