Academy Sending A Certified Letter
I received a certified letter yesterday from Academy. It said that there was some information left off the form 4473. It had the manager's name and phone number on it.
I called him and he explained that when I purchased a S&W M&P in early 2012 that I did not completely fill out the form. He he asked if I could come to the store in North Richland Hills and complete the form?
I will be going over next week to accommodate him, but isn't it there job to inspect the form thoroughly before I leave the store. After all they are worried about walking me out of the store with a new purchase while at the same time I am concealing two loaded pistols.
Anyone else have this happen to them?

I bought a cricket for my kid a few weeks ago and they were exceedingly through in making sure everything was done and done a certain way then had the manager come and check again and then walk me out with it. I wonder what would happen if you declined to go back to the store maybe they should send someone to your house on their dime instead on inconveniencing you.

Did he tell you what was missing? I wonder if you left off your SSI number and he wants you to fill it in.carlson1 wrote:I received a certified letter yesterday from Academy. It said that there was some information left off the form 4473. It had the manager's name and phone number on it.

Their error should not be your burden. I would suggest they schedule a time to come to your house for the info. But is there any record retention issue with the 4473 not being on their premises?

Re: Academy Sending A Certified Letter
Most likely Academy has an internal audit process that caught an error. They are probably trying to get it rectified to avoid getting hit with a violation should BATFE visit them and look over the paperwork. I bought a shotgun at cash America and they called asking me to come in to correct a 4473. I think I didn't check the ethnicity box. I had no problem driving in to do it. I was audited several times back in the 60's and 70's after GCA 68, but never had any hickies.

I will try my best to go by tomorrow and I will let everyone know what it was.
I think I should at least get a free box of .45 for going back.

You aren't the first person I have heard of getting one of these letters recently. I would tell them I need a store credit in the amount it cost you in gas for the round trip and your time.

Happened to me in the Houston area. Didn't get a letter, but I got a call. I did go down to fix whatever the issue was. What was upsetting was that it took 30 mins for the manager to figure out where the papers were located. I nearly left, but I decided to remain patient and polite.

I think the ATF is being less lenient these days and FFL's are worried more about complying. Any omission is considered a willful violation.

Then the BATFE would come rolling down your street in a military type vehicle with agents in full SWAT gear hanging off of each side of the vehicle and a couple on the back. Then kick your door down and round up all family members and hold them in handcuffs, all while pointing a gun at you forcing you to complete the paperwork.

Re: Academy Sending A Certified Letter
When the ATF does an audit/inspection of a dealer, among other things, they review the previous 12 months of 4473's. If there are any errors or omissions in the Customer area of these forms, the dealer is required to make an effort to have them corrected.
Errors happen sometimes, no matter how many people look at the form, it is easy to miss something.

Re: Academy Sending A Certified Letter
Never had an issue with the 4473. However, when I was stationed in California, a sporting goods store where I had purchased a Remington Model 870 called and told me I would have to return the shotgun to them because of a paperwork issue. In California, you have to be a resident of the state to purchase any firearm there...I had a Texas DL. They made copies of my military ID, Texas DL, and documents to prove that I was living in and stationed in California, which is in accordance with California law. I had purchased other firearms through other FFLs in California and never had a problem. Turns out that one of the California State forms was filled out incorrectly (by THEM). And that made the whole transaction null and void. They wanted me to bring it back, but I made them come to my house and get the thing as it was an hour drive to the store where I bought it. They refunded my money and gave me a $25 gift card. They said they actually changed company policy because of what happened to me (by policy I took it to mean how they train their employees) so that any other military folks wouldn't have problems. They were very apologetic and all, but it sure was annoying to the nth degree.
