Re: Carry Ammo
I would reiterate the advice to stick to 50 round boxes. Underwood ammo do some nice 9mm loads in the $25-$30 price range. I also like the black hills loads Cabela's usually have in.

Re: Carry Ammo
I use Win WB Personal Protection Series JHP 9mm 147gr. and .40 180 gr. Pre-panic prices was mid $25 for 9mm and low $30's for .40 in 50 rd. boxes. I've got 15 pistols and these feed in all - it just works well and everytime. Beats the $25-$35 for 20-25 rd. boxes of the "super-duper-Über-fancy-smancy ammo - and just as deadly.

Man, now when my gold dots get here I'm going to be unable to think anything but 'fancshy-schmanschy' when I load 'em up.WinoVeritas wrote:"super-duper-Über-fancy-smancy ammo

I noticed that the new "School Marshal" bill includes a requirement for frangible ammo. I am anxious to get back to DPS school to see what experience they may have semi-recently with testing such. In the past, with simple function testing of some of the old Glaser loads and their cousins, some people learned very quickly that their semis would fire one round and malfunction. Hopefully, anyone using the newer generations of frangible loads will make sure their gun runs reliably with the stuff.

What's your reason for doing this?docbrazos wrote: I probably have as much PD ammo as anyone but I generally have half the magazine with some type of hardball in my auto's.

I have 155 Gold Dots in the 40 and Fed 115 JHP 9BP in the wife's 9. Nothing very fancy. The 155s are very accurate and are right on point of aim.

Re: Carry Ammo
I carry hollow-points in defensive pistols, and usually a spare mag of more hollow-points. But if I have more than one spare mag, the second spare is usually FMJ. I figure that in the unlikely event that I'm in a firefight that lasts long enough to use that much ammo, by that time my targets might be behind cover and I may want the extra penetration. (And hopefully any innocent bystanders are by then out of the way or flat on the deck.)SQLGeek wrote:What's your reason for doing this?docbrazos wrote: I probably have as much PD ammo as anyone but I generally have half the magazine with some type of hardball in my auto's.
It may be unlikely that under stress I'm going to consider whether I want expanding bullets or more penetration, but who knows?
Be Prepared. That's what I learned in the Boy Scouts.

Re: Carry Ammo
OK but that's a very different scenario from loading a mag half and half. I understand having magazines loaded with different rounds available for different tasks.mgood wrote:I carry hollow-points in defensive pistols, and usually a spare mag of more hollow-points. Gold Dots, HST, DPX, Rangers, and PDX1 are all excellent choices.

Hornady Critical Duty 135gr
Federal HST 147gr
I believe that just about any modern day hollow point will get the job done.

for me it pretty much boils down to penetration/over penetration and/or projectile expansion. After all, I can't think of any round that any sane person would say "Gee, getting shot with that wouldn't be so bad"!
A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again.
