Walmart Pistol Ammo

Post by Beiruty »

How many cases of Pistol Ammo (specifically 9mm) does Walmart get per shipment? For last few weeks whether I call or stop by at any local Walmart, all 9mm are out of stock.

Cases? none.... individual boxes? Changes day to day. Out Walmart gets between 0 and 5 boxes per shipment and only gets 1-3 shipments per week that contain ammo.

If you live near an Academy, they seem to be getting much more than Walmart these days, as is Cabela's.

I just had to ask my local Walmart. As per sales guy on sport goods. They got 1-3 case (1,000rds to 2,000rds) each other week and that is it.

I don't think things have changed a lot in the retail world as far as profit margins go and sporting goods has always been used as a lure in the big box stores not a huge profit generating departments. Back in the 60's and 70's I worked retail sporting goods and profit margins were low. Most of the firearms we sold were at wholesale. We got a 10% discount if we paid the bill in 30 days. Ammo was low margin as well. Shooting accessories, Camping, fishing and athletics filled the gaps for profit mostly. The main reason we had a sporting goods department was to lure the males to the rear of the store. (you'll notice sporting goods is almost always in the back of the stores.) The strategy was for the guys to pass by merchandise in other departments and be tempted to buy something while their wives shopped. The store made big profits on soft-lines which carried the stores. We hard-lines managers called the other side "rag merchants"

It's been this way for months.
Ask them when their shipment comes in and when do they put the ammo on the shelves. That's when you want to show up.

I find pretty much whatever ammo I want at my local Academy. They put a sign out this week changing their limit from one box per caliber to two. They said they made the change because of the changing availability. :cheers2:

Not Walmart, Academy. I bought 2 boxes of Hornady Critical Defense in 9mm and 2 boxes in .40 caliber today at the Academy in Katy. Grand parkway & I-10.

Had to make a run to Austin from SATX this past Wednesday. Stopped at every Walmart in every town to So. Austin - nary a one had any pistol ammo of any caliber. Also, stopped in Academy's. They all had pistol ammo .22 thru .45 with 2-box limit - EXCEPT Selma and So. Austin - neither had any .22. Same for Cabela's in Buda, everything but .22.
