On Friday, May 4, an F5 tornado wiped the town of Greensburg, Kan., almost entirely off the map. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, along with the National Guard and local police from all over Kansas, then systematically kept out relief workers while they went house to house disarming the residents.

I don't.Russell wrote:I can guarentee you they would never try that in Texas
Seriously: the town was destroyed. Nothing left standing but the grain mill. Everyone and everything was gone, evacuated or otherwise. The "town" was nothing but rubble and basements.
FEMA rolls in, starts digging through the rubble and confiscating guns: who's going to stop them?

I see no evidence or proof of this story.
Last week I hear the opposite on NRANews, namely, that if police found weapons while searching for survivors, they took them for safe-keeping and made arrangements to return them immediately. NRANews does not have archives, but here is a statement from the NRA.
Here is another story about it.
As for keeping people out of the area, it is standard procedure to keep people out of disaster areas. The neighborhood where we lived was hit by a tornado once. The police set up road blocks on the roads leading into it. My wife was at work when the tornado hit, and she had quite a hard time getting home. The officers at the road block would not talk to her.
According to this site, nine people have been charged with looting in the area, including some rescue workers. That is why it is SOP to keep people out.

It's that they are finding weapons vs confiscating weapons. Finding, collecting and returning immediately seems prudent. Confiscating from people, no, finding in debris, yes. It appears that if you could describe your firearm, you got it back right away.seamusTX wrote:I see no evidence or proof of this story.

I don't see any problem with this.

....<snip>....
Almost nothing about this story rings true. IMHO. It's not help they are keeping out it's looters and gawkers and others that have no legitimate reason to be there. As for picking up guns off the ground where houses used to be, well I find that to be prudent and reasonable no matter who is doing it.
And I don't see how that can mistaken for confiscation.

This story is as phony as a $3 bill.
Going house to house disarming people? The whole area was completely LEVELED. There were no people to disarm, and no houses to go "house to house" with.
As others have pointed out, the NRA is all over the Greensburg aftermath, and PRAISED the way the authorities have handled things so far.
If the NRA is OK with what they are doing there, so am I.
This story is the product of some 'net lunatics.

After all the publicity about confiscations in NOLA, I would think that gunfire would have resulted if anyone started going door to door disarming people who were trying to salvage something from the rubble that had been their home.
I call bull on the story.

What???
Do you guys think the story was a plant by these anarchist "relief" foks???
Just to stir the pot and get everybody's bowels in an uproar???
I know it didn't work here because we got some smart folks who saw right through this from the get go...
But you have to admit that the "make-up/demographics" of the 9 people arrested for looting is interesting...And pathetically sad...
One thing is for sure...
Disasters tend to bring out the best and worst in people...
