Possibly moving to NC

A good job opportunity has come up for me in North Carolina. I have never lived outside of Texas, and honestly I am fairly anxious as well as excited about moving. We have a 20mo old daughter, and the grandparents aren't too happy about the grand baby moving away.

I haven't accepted the position yet. My wife and I are really thinking about whether this is a good move or not.

That being said, NC's CHL laws aren't nearly as good as Texas' IMO. It appears that no city parks are allowed, nowhere that charges admission, no gov't buildings, no resturants that sell alcohol, and any gunbusters sign is valid.

Obviously, I can't allow a CHL law to determine my entire life and where I live, but it is a consideration among a host of other things. I would also miss my fellow Texas CHL friends her on the forum, but I suppose they have internet in NC:)

Well, back to pondering.

Nope, It's Greensboro. It was awfully pretty around there, and the company seems like a really good place to work. I was actually planning to go back to school and finish my PhD until this popped up, and now I am trying to decide how much I want the PhD, and if I should continue in that route over this opportunity. Its a difficult decision for me.

That's the magic question, and frankly one I haven't been able to answer over the past couple of weeks. I'm not old by any means, but getting a little too old to go gallivanting off to school for too long. I just have to determine what is the best option.

I don't plan on teaching, so the PhD doesn't buy me that much over the MS, but this is the last opportunity I can see that I have to go back to school full time and finish, my wife can work and be my sugar-mama and we can get by, but that is 3-4 years of no contributions to my 401k and 4 years that we can't have another baby.

But on the flip side, we'll be able to stay in Texas a little longer and let the baby get to know her grandparents some, and I'll have the D if I ever did decide I wanted to teach or move into R&D. And the somewhat increased earning power would allow me to put more into 401k to catch up.

I suppose I'll know more once I see the actual numbers in the offer and my wife's offer from the hospital in Bryan. Right now I am just speculating on salary and career growth potential.

my whole family has taken it upon themselves to move to the Kommunist Republik of Kalifornia. I keep telling them to move back to the U.S. and maybe (just maybe!!) I'll rendezous with them somewhere.

Well, I'm off to NC in about 4 weeks. I decided that this opportunity was the better of the two options. They are handling the relocation completely, so that is a load off my shoulders.

Anyone looking for a house on ~2 acres close to McKinney?

Regarding the move, they are paying a moving company to haul my stuff. Do you have any ideas how to protect the guns in my safe from flopping around? Handguns I will probably take with me, but my long guns will probably stay in the safe inside the moving truck.

Perhaps they have dealt with that before and they will tell me what to do, but I was just wondering if I should wrap them all up and try to secure them to the walls of the safe somehow.

In 2001 I moved from RI to TX. The company handled all of the relocation expenses. I moved in March, while the rest of the family waited until June so the kids could finish up their school years.

I didn't want to have the moving company handle my guns so I rented a UHAUL and drove to TX with the trailer hooked up to the back of my pickup. Inside was my gun safe, guns, ammo, reloading equipment, etc. What some idiot like Matt Lauer would call "an arsenal".

Wrap some extra cushioning (blankets, towels, etc.) around your guns. Watch out for I30 through Arkansas. Unless they have rebuilt it since then it is a continuous string of "whoop-de-doos" clear across the state. Somebody there doesn't know how to pour concrete.

No problems transporting guns anywhere between here and NC.
