Re: Got an email from DPS today about Instructor Renewal
Does anyone have any info on where I can sign up for a NRA Basic Pistol instructor's course if this will be required for CHL Instructor renewal by the end of the year?

Re: Got an email from DPS today about Instructor Renewal
Well, as of tomorrow morning we are in the six month renewal period, still no information from DPS. Do you think the second special session will delay the decisions even though there are not any CHL related issues on the agenda. Has anyone heard anything from the questions submitted to RDS through the original e-mail? I know that many that frequent this board have gotten a head start on what we think will be the new requirements but I have talked to several instructors in my area who tell me they are not doing anything until they get it straight from DPS that what I have been saying is structurally speculation. Also, the guy I teach with sent his instructor renewal in as soon as he got the e-mail and has already received his new instructor certificate. They sent him a request for the new CHL -90, so far he said he is already renewed why should he bother. Anyone heard of a certificate being revoked after it was issued.garcia946 wrote: The renewal period for CHL Instructors is not set to begin until six (6) months prior to the certificate expiration. Unfortunately, a renewal notification was mailed too early to those CHL Instructors whose certificate expires on December 31, 2013. We apologize for the miscommunication and want to ensure each of you is provided accurate information regarding the renewal process.

Was he already NRA certified? I applied immediately when they sent out the notices, and they didn't send me a cert, but I didn't have the NRA cert at that point. Haven't heard of anybody else getting their renewal certs from DPS yet either.6 Point Star wrote:Well, as of tomorrow morning we are in the six month renewal period, still no information from DPS. Re: Got an email from DPS today about Instructor Renewal
He is like me, he had the NRA certification when we first started teaching CHL but lost it when NRA started insisting that you had to teach at least one NRA class a year to keep the certification. Since he has not yet sent in the updated CHL-90 I suppose they don't know he no longer has it. We both were in the second CHL class in Austin in 95.
I have not heard of anyone else getting their certificate either, figured maybe he slipped through the crack.

Just a point of information ... I, too, submitted all of the required paperwork upon receipt of the notification from the state. I've had my certificate since 2000 and I am an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor ... I sent this in as required on the CHL-90 form ... and have heard nothing yet. But they sure took my renewal money fast!

Amen, brother! And have been suspiciously quiet about how they plan on handling that, too.bmcferren wrote:Just a point of information ... I'm not sure I understand. How they are planning to handle what?sjfcontrol wrote:Amen, brother! If you mean the NRA instructor requirement, then they are going to follow the law and require that CHL instructors meet the requirements. This means TCLEOSE, NRA, or "other" certification, with the latter requiring that active teaching.
I'm sure they are busy trying to prepare for the changes coming Sept. 1st, including preparing a new, or at least amended, CHL-100. The CHL test also has to be changed and made available prior to Sept. 1st.
I hope there aren't any instructors who are still hoping that they will not be required to have a certification other than their CHL Instructor Certificate.

No, I was referring to the fact that they took our money at the time, and haven't said anything as to how they will handle that, as I believe it's only valid for 6 months on renewal, and that time will be up by sept, I think. I have no issues regarding the NRA requirements.Charles L. Cotton wrote:I'm not sure I understand. How they are planning to handle what?sjfcontrol wrote:Amen, brother! Now I understand. Since DPS sent out an email stating that their earlier email to instructors was sent in error, I can't imagine they won't honor the payments already made by some folks.sjfcontrol wrote:No, I was referring to the fact that they took our money at the time, and haven't said anything as to how they will handle that, as I believe it's only valid for 6 months on renewal, and that time will be up by sept, I think. Well, I would assume they would, but you know what that makes of us. Besides I've never been particularly successful guessing what government agencies will do.Charles wrote:Now I understand. The proper thing for them to do would have been to refund all of the payments, and invalidate any submitted paperwork. Then we all start from scratch whenever they open up again.
Second best would have been to announce that payments would be extended through the end of the year -- though there might be instructors that find the new requirements unacceptable, and would prefer to get a refund.
Instead they selected the third path -- "crickets".
And speaking of crickets, the last I heard they were requesting we send in the CHL-90s so they could work with us on a one to one basis to make sure we all were good to go. To my knowledge, nobody has heard from them since.

Re: Got an email from DPS today about Instructor Renewal
Why should they refund our renewal payment? Just make extra work for them and us.
The 'assumption' you have made is the renewal for instructors is limited to 6 months before the instructor certificate expires (12/31). That is a wrong assumption. A CHL cannot be renewed more than 6 months early BECAUSE the attached CHL-100 has to be w/i 6 months. That does not apply to instructors. I don't know how early you can renew your instructor's certificate (or your d/l for that matter). i know you can renew your d/l 6 to 8 months early (then, DPS may suspend it with out notifying you. :().
They are real busy, processing new apps, watching new legislation, preparing new courses, lesson plans, tests (2, including a 100 item test for instructors), preparing for renewal courses for instructors.... Small wonder we have not heard from them.
I'm glad they took/kept my money. Should put me at the front of the line for the instructor renewal classes.
It will be real easy for them to verify we are NRA certified. All they need is to log into the NRA training site and check. No need to 'work with us'. Now, if you are claiming a nationally recognized class - lots of luck. They probably will need to contact/work w/you. :)
