Completed the Class today
I spent the day at Tactical Safety Institute in the northern San Antonio/Bracken area doing the CHL qualifying class. It went well, although it makes for a long day for us older gentlemen. The range session was carried out in the rain, although we avoided the worst of the downpour. I was glad to be shooting my NSW P-226 with phosphorous coated internals for corrosion resistance. I had not anticipated rain, and did not bring cleaning gear on this trip, but was able to borrow a cloth and some spray lube, get the weapon dried off and back together.
I was pleased to shoot either a 249 or a 254, depending on whether that flier on the line between the 8 and the 7 was mine or the fellow in the next lane.
The classroom session went pretty well, I think. I have nothing to compare it to, of course, so can't say whether it was better or worse than other offerings. There was a mix of video, news reports highlighting certain issues and lecture. Both instructors seemed qualified, and knowledgeable. There were a couple of issues that I am not sure they were correct about, but I took no notes and cannot now recall which these were, and it may be that they misunderstood what I heard, or I had the mistaken impression to begin with. At $69, it was fairly priced, I think.
I have the benefit of several years of CHL in California and a few years of IDPA participation (I won't call it competition as I was never very good at it!) and bullseye match shooting, as well as 3 or 4 weekend shooting proficiency classes over the last few years. Some of my classmates did not have those advantages. Some had purchased their guns only a few days ago, and were still getting use to them. One lady had a number of stoppages, more in 50 rounds than I have experienced in more than 5,000 rounds on my P-226.
Anyway as soon as I get my Texas DL number, I'll finish the process, finally.

Re: Completed the Class today
Glad to hear it went well.
The number of stoppages people have amazed me during the classes I took personally or observed. After teaching some myself, it ceased to amaze me. A high percentage of students fall into one of two categories:
-they bring a new gun that's never been shot and never been cleaned. Straight from the FFL to the class
-they have shot it, and have cleaned it, but it was so long ago any lubricant has long since evaporated
I have my suspicions a high percentage also have no idea how to clean and/or lube them to begin with.
Even at the CHL Instructor class there were several people with gun issues.

Hey glad you made it through , the rain had to be a bummer , Squrt the weapon down good with WD 40 , really good moisture remover (better for that than lubrication actually) .You had a CHL in CA , heard they were hard to come by there , is that true ? I experinced the same thing as far as people new to a handgun , the instructor had to take time to give lessons . Hope you enjoyed it !

Re: Completed the Class today
In CA, it all depends on the Sheriff in each county. Some, LA, SF, are "no issue." Some are virtually "shall issue" out in the cow counties to the east and north in the mountains, etc. Fill out the papers, pay the fee, have no record and you are in. San Diego is not impossible, kind of "rather not" issue, but you have to pretty much be a business owner with a good reason, "good cause" as the statute says. A life long upstanding citizen, lawyer, business owner, good long term references, perseverance, and cash, like me, can get one. I had a number of death threats arising out of one of my businesses as a foreclosure trustee. The one good thing to come from the real estate crash is that death threats have dropped off to practically nothing. I haven't had one in several years! Considering how big a dent it put in my net worth, I'd almost be glad to see the death threats!!!chuck j wrote:Hey glad you made it through , the rain had to be a bummer , Squrt the weapon down good with WD 40 , really good moisture remover (better for that than lubrication actually) .You had a CHL in CA , heard they were hard to come by there , is that true ? I spent many months and a lot more than $500 before I had mine. None of that was campaign contributions or that sort of thing. A required class, shooting performance at the Sheriff's Range, fees, it is neither easy, quick nor cheap. In a county of 3-4 million, there are fewer than 2000 or so, not enough to make a decent crowd at Petco Park.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Re: Completed the Class today
Glad you're well on your way.
Regarding the stoppages, a friend of my wife's went shooting with us one afternoon & her pistol started acting up. So I asked her when was the last time she cleaned it. Clean it??? We put hers up & shot ours. Then went home & tried to show her how to clean her gun. It was such a mess, we ended up taking it in to a gunsmith for a deep clean. Since she doesn't want to spend another couple hundred at the gunsmith, she's much better at maintenance. Buy in her defense, she really did not know that she has to clean the gun....

I don't have it yet, of course. I am waiting to get my TDL next month before applying, but I have Utah and Florida permits already to ease the wait. I've been carrying everywhere since I've been here, everywhere but the rehab facility my mom is currently in which has a "sign." I even carried at the class, but I did ask discretely of the head guy just to make sure that wouldn't give anyone the yips. It did not.chuck j wrote:What you said about getting a CHLin the golden bear state is about what i'V heard , glad you got one here .

What do SEALS call a Texas rain storm?JALLEN wrote:I spent the day at Tactical Safety Institute in the northern San Antonio/Bracken area doing the CHL qualifying class. A dry heat.
If you can read this, thank a teacher. If it's on the internet, thank a geek.

I just received my CHL in the mail. I sent the final paperwork in on 3/19.

Re: Completed the Class today
This was true for me! In fact, the first time I had ever shot any firearm was in my CHL class. I think I got 275 with a G17 or G19. It FTF twice but that was my fault, I had never shot before and didn't have a proper grip. Two years later, I'm building AR's and reloading. God, I love Texas.punkndisorderly wrote:Glad to hear it went well.

Is it a valid 30.06 or what?JALLEN wrote:I don't have it yet, of course. I am waiting to get my TDL next month before applying, but I have Utah and Florida permits already to ease the wait. Re: Completed the Class today
That is good to hear. My Father lives in Placerville, up in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. He is a small business owner and I am constantly encouraging him to just go ahead and apply because El Dorado County is close to "shall issue".JALLEN wrote:In CA, it all depends on the Sheriff in each county. I was just emailing a LAPD guy I used to work with, he's been a patrol officer for 4 or 5 years now. I asked him how many valid CHLs he's come across in his work. None. Not a single one. The only legally armed people he has ever come across were off duty cops. So sad.

You're right I got a 235 out of 250. I knew it ended in 5 and I thought it was scored out of 300.bizarrenormality wrote:Out of 250? Your neighbors need some training.TheCytochromeC wrote:In fact, the first time I had ever shot any firearm was in my CHL class. I think I got 275
Re: Completed the Class today
Glad to hear it went well. I remember when I took my class at least 7 out of 25 people had issues with their firearms, jamming to feeding issues. I clean my firearm at least once a week for everything is in top condition. The guy next me told me that he just picked up his handgun the day before, I was like yikes "made more distance between us on the firing line" he had jams each round of shots, I got a perfect score on my shooting test 250, just like my Sig!
