ATF considers a semi auto a PISTOL and a revolver a REVOLVER for firearm documentation purposes.
NRA says that a pistol is the generic cover for both semi auto and revolver.
Texas CHL says a semi auto is a Pistol and a revolver is not.
I think we're picking nits on this one!!!!

This has been a funny thread. The OP asked if his chl certification covered him for a pistol . I think everyone knew what he was asking.

Then it turned into who knew more about pistols and revolvers and which dictionary was the best, ect.

Thanks, this has been fun.

Actually, you need to go to the real definition and ask Mr. Webster.
pis·tol
[pis-tl] Show IPA noun, verb, pis·toled, pis·tol·ing or ( especially British ) pis·tolled, pis·tol·ling.
noun
1.
a short firearm intended to be held and fired with one hand.
re·volv·er
[ri-vol-ver] Show IPA
noun
1.
a handgun having a revolving chambered cylinder for holding a number of cartridges, which may be discharged in succession without reloading
So, pistol covers both. Revolver only covers them, as a semi-automatic covers those. There are also single-shot pistols.

The real term would be handgun
hand·gun
[hand-guhn] Show IPA
noun
any firearm that can be held and fired with one hand; a revolver or a pistol.

I believe KeithB has resolved the issue, but could you provide a reference to CHL law where the term "pistol" is used along with its definition?
I briefly scanned the the laws pertaining to CHL and could only find a reference to "handgun" and defined two different types of handguns; those that are semiautomatic (SA) and those that are not (NSA).

BATF has in their regulations a definition for "pistol" and for "revolver".

27 CFR 479.11 - Meaning of terms. Subpart B

Pistol. A weapon originally designed, made, and intended to fire a projectile (bullet) from one or more barrels when held in one hand, and having (a) a chamber(s) as an integral part(s) of, or permanently aligned with, the bore(s); and (b) a short stock designed to be gripped by one hand and at an angle to and extending below the line of the bore(s).

Revolver. A projectile weapon, of the pistol type, having a breechloading chambered cylinder so arranged that the cocking of the hammer or movement of the trigger rotates it and brings the next cartridge in line with the barrel for firing.

And TXDPS separates the two in only one place:

PC Subsection 46.01(12) "Armor-piercing ammunition" means handgun ammunition
that is designed primarily for the purpose of penetrating metal or body
armor and to be used principally in pistols and revolvers
. (emphasis mine)

It is the only place where "pistol" is found and only the second place where "revolver" is found.

When was BATF ever right about anything.

So, if you are reloading 44 mags do you use a pistol primer or a revolver primer? "rlol"
