I believe the improving economy had the most to do with it.

I'm not giving Slick credit for it, but I can't deny that the job situation and standard of living for most people I know was better in Clinton's second term than in Bush's second term, and much better than either of Obama's terms.anygunanywhere wrote:You need to get that tongue out of the cheek before you bite it.mojo84 wrote:I believe the improving economy had the most to do with it.

Interesting. Hmmm.RHenriksen wrote: Anybody read Freakonomics? The drop in birthrate due to Roe v Wade's legalization of abortion has been held out as another reason for the drop in crime. Fewer males of prime-crime years.
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

For abortion to have that impact you would have to have seen a huge decline in the number of males in the U.S. between the ages of 15 and 24 from 1988 onward. Or is it that we didn't have as many "unwanted/out of wedlock" births after Roe v. Wade ? Nope, not there either, illegitimate births have risen from 11% of all births in 1970 to 41% of all births in 2009.C-dub wrote:Interesting. Hmmm.RHenriksen wrote: Anybody read Freakonomics? John Lott debunks the premise, http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,377181,00.html and argues that we've seen a net increase in crime due to Roe v. Wade.

Actually, there is a pretty strong link between the removal of lead from gasoline and violent crime rates:

I'm sure that the millions of tons of tetra-ethyl lead that was dumped into the air of our cities in the post-Great Depression era through the 80s and in some areas the 90s had an immeasurable negative impact on public health. Lead's toxicity and the results of over exposure are now well known,terryg wrote:Actually, there is a pretty strong link between the removal of lead from gasoline and violent crime rates:

...even moderately high levels of lead exposure are associated with aggressivity, impulsivity, ADHD, and lower IQ. And right there, you've practically defined the profile of a violent young offender.
Given the linked article's author is Kevin Drum of Mother Jones and CalPundit, I did some more investigation.There are some glaring anomalies that the lead = crime thesis doesn't cover;

That we are benefiting from a happy convergence of factors, all contributing to the overall reductions in crime, is cause to celebrate.
And reflect on how even the most benign intentions, such as eliminating pre-ignition knock in IC motors, or compassionate sentencing reforms, can have effects on our society for generations.
