MN video: LEO's incomplete patdown didn't find the .38!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lVKSXA45Gs
The above link is video taken by the LEO's backseat camera of a 21 year old man picked up
in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota by 2 transit policemen.
They were being quite lenient with him and were just going to give him a courtesy ride home, but no arrest.
He starts fumbling in his pants and drops a loaded .38 revolver on the back floor.
The car is stopped, the passenger LEO enters the back seat with gun drawn, but carefully indexing his trigger finger
along the slide, while he starts tussling with the man.
The LEO's mistake had been stopping the patdown as soon as they found his booze. I'm glad they didn't get shot.

Very fortunate.
Wonder what kind of disciplinary action they faced.

You didn't mention that the prisoner dropped the gun not once, but twice! Yes, they were very lucky, indeed.

Complacency kills. Thankfully it didn't get that far.

Disciplined for what? A trainee screwed up on a pat down. That is a training issue not a discipline issue. If he keeps it up, he will not make training. The passenger was good to remain alert and ask what he was doing. I used to use a NAA 22 that folds like a knife for training. Trainees would often miss it, and when they did I would hate to be them. However that is how they learn. A good patdown is where the person being patdown is upset by the groping, ect. With all the clothing that guy was wearing, the more time it would take to be thorough.Jumping Frog wrote:Very fortunate.

While I agree with that part, the officer grabbing the bg by the throat and almost chewing on his face while swearing at him should be subject to discipline. Yes, he was scared, yes, he was ashamed that he missed the gun, but at the point that the bg was restrained, he needed to back off not continue holding him by the throat.texanjoker wrote:Disciplined for what? This is a false generalization. I know a few that would appreciate a good groping, etc. Depending on the outcome, it might be their last one for a long time.papajohn1964 wrote:A good patdown is where the person being patdown is upset by the groping, ect.

Bet they won't do that again.
Re: MN video: LEO's incomplete patdown didn't find the .38!
I saw a training video where they did not shake down a suspect that shot a cop in kali. He was in interview, cop steps out. BG puts the cap back on the water he was drinking, pulled a full sized 1911 from his pants and vacated his head a bit. I have to wonder how many cops touched that guy from the point he was in custody and no one noticed a full sized firearm.
EDIT - Jun 28, 2009 – Ricardo Alfonso Cerna did that. I looked it up in case some were curious.

I saw the same video. Even posted it on a different forum in CA when it happened...people got upset I posted it. You need to keep searching until you get ALL the weapons. I pulled 4 knives off a dude the other day. You just don't stop until the search is complete.JeepGuy79 wrote:I saw a training video where they did not shake down a suspect that shot a cop in kali. sorry if I upset anyone with that post. I really had no idea that video was all over the internet like that. The one I saw was in a training vid.
That video is NSFW (at least at my work) and is super graphic. I wasn't recommending anyone watch it. I agree with the joker. It is so ez to miss something it is important you are careful and thorough if you are wanting a wild human being in captivity.

I accidentally stumbled upon the Alfonso video recently. Both of these cases are stark reminders for LEOs, I'm sure.
One thing about the Alfonso video though: With a .45 at point blank range, I was astonished that it wasn't even more graphic due to an exit wound on the other side.

I think it is likely because of the way he shot himself. and ammo used. bullet did not exit I am pretty sure.Robert*PPS wrote:I accidentally stumbled upon the Alfonso video recently. Both of these cases are stark reminders for LEOs, I'm sure.
