Bathroom accident (almost) with sidearm

Post by Dreamer42 »

I appolgize if this should be on the bathroom thread. While visiting a local assisted living facility on behalf of a disabled Vietnam Vet friend, I went into a large single restroom in the lobby area. In this type of environment the door is locked and I can place the weapon virtually anywhere in the spacious 8x12 room. So, I placed the gun on top of the toilet lid, thinking it was flat and safe. I considered placing it on the counter next to the sink, but then I thought what might someone's reaction be if they walked in on me and saw a gun. I sat down and next thing I know clank, clink, wham. The lid to the toilet bowl was ever so slightly sloped, causing my 1911 to slide off and fall between my back and the tank. Wow. I carry cocked and locked, so my first instinct was a heavy "oh my god." I slowly turned and gently took the gun and examined it to be sure the thumb safety was still on. I then place it on the floor. Note to self: In this kind of situation, just go ahead and place it on the floor, anyway. I hate lessons like this one. I really, REALLY try to know my surroundings and anticipate everything. This one just caught me off guard.

Well, given your position at the time, no concern about needing a clean pair of undies.

I'm glad the incident wasn't any more embarrassing (or worse) than it was.

In future similar circumstances, consider placing it in the "hammock" formed by your lowered trousers and shorts. Its safe, secure, close by, and very difficult for someone outside to observe.

I was thinking the toilet bowl might have been cracked and wondering how you were going to explain that!

However, I've been in restrooms like that and since one has that level of privacy and no real adequate platform to place the gun just took some toilet paper and made a sanitary place for it on the floor in front of me. It has no chance of falling anywhere since it's already on the floor and hopefully you won't forget it right there in front of you.

Not something the general public ever thinks about. I sure didn't until I started carrying. My last time in a public restroom at McDonalds there was no place to put my firearm because I hadn't brought a purse and there was no place to lay it. I don't ever put it on the floor because its visible from the next stall. Anyway, I was so busy making sure the gun stayed in the holster and the holster tight to my body that I didn't notice my brandnew iPhone 5 had slithered out of my back pocket onto the floor. I didn't miss it until half an hour later. Thankfully someone honest found the phone and turned it in.

In similar restrooms I wipe out the wash basin with paper towels if it is wet, then put a paper towel down and put my gun on that.

Mine just stays in the holster. Not so complicated.

One of these previous threads, I even posted a picture which quickly drew a mod-slap and deletion. :biggrinjester:
