Gunfire and moments of fear as a rural Oregon school tests its readiness

"HALFWAY -- Two masked men wearing hoodies and wielding handguns burst into the Pine Eagle Charter School in this tiny rural community on Friday. Students were at home for an in-service day, so the gunmen headed into a meeting room full of teachers and opened fire.
Someone figured out in a few seconds that the bullets were not drawing blood because they were blanks and the exercise was a drill, designed to test Pine Eagle's preparation for an assault by "active shooters" who were, in reality, members of the school staff. But those few seconds left everybody plenty scared. "

This is insanity. For there to be a drill and none of the faculty was notified? If there had been a (school-board approved) CHL there may have been some REAL casualties. I think drills like this are bogus. These people are not trained LEO, military or security. They're teachers in an education workshop and their job is education, not security. This drill indicates nothing whatsoever. I've wondered myself what might happen if something similar went down in a public location, or at my church, then after the smoke had cleared and I'm reloading my second magazine into my 1911, someone says, "Oh my god it was just a drill." I just don't think we need to be playing around with this kind of thing if not properly done. BTW, I am a HS teacher. This had better not happen in our school. They'd never hear the end of it. :bigmouth

Sounds to me like something very important was accomplished.

Any faculty who might have been virulently against arming any teachers or administrators before, may now be rethinking their politics. Just like the conservative is a liberal who's been mugged...

That's a good one, Keith. "rlol" What my point was, was that anyone can burst into a room of unsuspecting people and pull of a stunt like that. Looking at the news for the past few years, I'm not sure we need a drill to illustrate to us we need better security. I think the real events should be enough. It's like dropping an egg from a two story building. None of us will
be surprised when the egg bursts upon contact with the ground. Ditto with schools, eh?

:banghead: I just think this is so darn bone headed. You can't have drills like this without notifying everyone there will be a drill.

I wonder how long it will take for the first person to file a lawsuit for stress or PTSD?

None of *us* would be surprised; but look at how many liberals insist that 'gun control' is the solution to human beings behaving badly. And that arming teachers or administrators, or putting cops in schools is 'not the answer'. Clearly, it's *not* obvious to them what the realistic, effective solution is. They still think 'gun free zone' signs is the solution.

The surprised staff had received training from the Union County Sheriff's Office on active shooter scenarios.
And all but 2 would be dead! I would like to know what training they got, in a near ambush you have 2 options.
1- Attack like a crazy person maybe live/ maybe die.
2- Die

I know where my training leads me.

Think about it. These faculty members had just been trained on what to do, and they still demonstrated they could not handle the drill. It's anecdotal, but to me, it says simply that some will be able to handle it and others won't. Therefore, allowing those willing to be sheepdogs to do so is the only viable recourse. Putting these sheepdogs through a drill like this could then have catastrophic consequenses.

This was another instance of ignorant recklessness by school officials who have no clue how to teach people to counter a violent attack.

If their training had been remembered or if some of the "victims" had simply given some thought to what they would do ahead of time, the fake attackers could have been serious injured or killed by persons acting completely reasonably in their own defense by seizing one of the blank guns and making a contact shot to the head, or using a chair as an impact weapon.

Luckily nothing bad happened this time, but, IMHO, the folks who put this together showed a depraved indifference to human life.

I can assure you our school administration would never do this. They even give us advance notice of fire drills.

You WOULD NOT do this at a TEXAS SCHOOL!
Why not? I doubt there's more than two or three school districts in the whole State where it's legal to carry.
