$250 for a brick of 22LR? Are you nuts?

Happened to be running errands in Kerrville and listening to the radio and heard a commercial for Young's Jewelers and Guns (lot more firearms than jewelry in the store) saying that they had ammo in stock including 22 caliber. The announcer cautioned "now the ammo prices have gone up... yada, yada."

Since I was very close to the store I stopped in and a young feller asked what he could do for me. Me: do you have any bricks of 22 in stock? clerk: pulling a box of 525 22LR off the shelf, yes we do. It's $250. Me: "I wouldn't pay $30 for it (and that would be too much) and I spun around and beat a hasty retreat.

What the heck? Maybe the advert was designed to pull shoppers into the store knowing fully well nobody in their right mind would pay fifty cents a round for 22 ammo. If indeed that was the plan, shame on them .

My issue is not with them charging $250, it's all about the come-on advert. (And yes, $250 is a crazy price but they could ask $1,000 a box, your choice to buy or not.)

My BIL told me about prices like that at a couple gun shows last month.

$30 is a tiny bit high, but isn't too bad. That's still less than .06 cent per round. But, almost 0.48 cents per round? NO WAY!

I know this price is inflated, but I just bought another 440 round tin of Bulgarian 7.62x54R ammo for $99.95. The last one I bought was $79.95, so $99.95 seems a bit steep, but $99.95 for 440 rounds of .30 caliber ammo beats $250 for 500 rounds of .22LR all day long! The advantage seems to favor $175.00 bolt action and a $100 brick of ammo over a similarly priced .22 and $250 brick of ammo.......if you discount recoil and noise.......and don't count the bayonet. If you add those things back in, the Mosin beats a .22 hands down.

Well, we could but not in this thread . I'm a firm believer in a free market setting prices of goods and services. I was really annoyed (okay, I was way beyond annoyed) about the radio ad advertising they had 22 ammo but "the prices have gone up." True, but misleading IMO.

Just try to remember them when (if) things ever calm down. I've got my list of people I won't ever do business with.

They're free to charge whatever they like. I'm free to call them names and never shop there and send everyone I know somewhere else.

It's like charging for the restroom based on how bad the customer looks like he's gotta go. Yeah, you might make some cash, but hopefully there are enough "cleanup in aisle 7's" from people like me that they come to regret it.

Yes, of course, they could ask for a million dollars and be within their rights, however: The 'attempt' to do so threatens the public's doing business with them in the future, because that's the other side of the free enterprise coin...

The future of those who'd like to make money off us when it's a sellers market is just fine, but watch out for the rebound...
