Moving to Texas. Any advice?

i got here ASAIC (as soon as i could) from Brooklyn, NY. I moved to the city of Grand Prairie in 2005, right in the middle of dallas and fort worth. I never looked back!

We're in Kerr county, Texas Hill Country, and have a good sheriff - he was raised on a ranch and understands the culture. Kerrville a wonderful size city (~15k), an hour away from San Antonio and its shopping and airport. By the way, it's sort of counter intuitive but San Antonio has a liberal mayor (the darling of the Dems, Castro) and population in spite of the large military presence.

To give you an idea of how gun-friendly Kerrville is, it's legal to hunt within the city limits.

I moved to Texas in 89 after being raised in NY. Been back a couple times to see family and let the kids experience NYC but have no desires to go back again.
I love the East Texas area. A lot woods, lakes, rivers and proud gun owners. Really hard to go wrong anywhere. We could use some conservative gun owners to move to Austin to help combat the zombies invading there!

Austin is a great place to drive through, if you can-the traffic is terrible, to get to ANY other part of the state. With the exception of our loco mayor, San Antonio is a pretty nice town-generally gun friendly-but rapidly more and more urban and losing it's appeal. We recently bought property southeast of Dallas near Athens and couldn't be happier. Hoping to retire there in 5 or so years. Although Dallas strikes me as too much big city, the surrounding area is great. BTW-(nearby) Athens city motto is "The best people in Texas"!

Also-though we grew up in SoCal, we got to Texas as fast as we could and our kids are Texans for sure.

I'm a northeasterner by birth too. I'm in the North Dallas area and I find it a very gun-friendly community. You just can't beat the weather either. I haven't seen a 17 degree below zero or worse day in the 14 years I've lived here. It doesn't get much below 20 degrees on a bad day. If you haven't experienced tornado warnings, then that takes a little getting used to but generally it's over as quickly as it started. Texas hospitality is not a fable. Wherever you decide to make camp, I think you'll love it here as much as I do.

Avoid the large cities in Texas and you're good to go.

Irrespective of state, large cities seem to attract the liberal, elitist crowd.

These are the people who buy their groceries at Whole Foods, only drink so-called fair trade coffee, drive a Prius and assume a sanctimonious, royal air of entitlement....one that insists any other perspective (like self-defense) is just WRONG.

Native Texan here. Make you a checklist of what you want then visit some local cities websites. In your business you may want a to locate to a mid sized city such as Waco, Tyler, Lubbock, Abilene, Wichita Falls, etc. Each offers a different geography but what is common is great people.

North east Texas, we are far enough away from dallas to be sane
and close enough if we feel like seeing the BIG city

but
actually
the only place i would stay away from is rockwall and rockwall county

taxes are out of control and waaaaaaaay to many ca. transplants with ca ideals about everything. I had to live there for 12 years and it was awful


houston, austin and dallas have great features....just live outside their grip and enjoy our great state

Nothing personal Cajun, but if you think Dallas is going to ever be liberal... All I can say is LOL. Same for Houston. Even the gay folk in Dallas are conservative. :)

Sad indeed!! The conservatives need to quickly get their agenda in line. I know it is not popular to say this but the religious connections may be what is killing us. I am more of a libertarian than a republican but vote republican so I don't help libtards by splitting the vote.

I am relocating to Texas from the Northeast. I am a Security Consultant and am looking to move to Texas soon. I am trying to find an area in Texas that is gun friendly and that would not make it impossible to get an FFL. Are all the towns / cities in Texas gun friendly. It is crazy up here in the Northeast. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Only places in Texas between El Paso and Orange and between Amarillo and Brownsville will probably be gun friendly.

Do you mean IT Security i.e. CISSP, CISM, CISA, CGEIT, etc., or physical security i.e. personal and property protection, etc.??

Advice:
- Bring your conservative friends with you. Most of the defenders of the Alamo were from other states. If you believe in our ideals, where you came from doesn't matter, although you'll hear plenty about it at friendly backyard BBQs! lol

- Consider renting a house to learn the area before you buy.

- If you did mean IT Security, even though I'm biased to Fort Worth and hesitate to say anything good about the metromess on the other side of the airport, those jobs are most abundant in north Dallas, Plano, Frisco, and probably creeping up through Allen and towards McKinney.

- Watch out for property taxes. They're the dirty little secret nobody talks about when touting the absence of an income tax.

- Don't run out of gas between Pecos and El Paso. It's a long walk for a refill.

- Get ready to hear, "You think this is hot? Wait'll (read: wait until) August!"

- Chili doesn't have beans! (This might stir something up, but I'll stick by it.)

- If you haven't tried a Shiner Bock, make that a priority to celebrate your first evening here.

- Ice cream is called "Blue Bell". If somebody says "ice cream", they're talking about "Blue Bell".
