Frustrations with CHL-90? Where am I going wrong

#1

Post by kjolly »

I applied on line in late Dec to take the instructors class. Knowing they move a little slow because of work load I checked my status in late Jan and it appeared they thought something was missing. I then inquired again and there is a requirement for a CHL-90 form. I had filled out a online form when paying and regeristering for the class and there was no mention of CHL-90. The message on the web site is that the form is currently being re-written and to contact rsd to get a copy. A little more running around with queries that were not answered and being a enterprising person visited the HDQ in person and was told the form has to be downloaded from the web site. A few days later heard back from the rsd with the same information.

Am I doing something wrong? Seems from posts in this section that other people are being accepted for classes, so I fear I am doing something wrong?

Additional information, I'm signed up for the BIT and NRA Pistol class on March 15, 2013 as thanks to the posts on this site discovered this to be a requirement. (no mention of it on the DPS site).

Most of the people you see getting into class have had their paperwork in since August and September of last year, and before that. Yes, you have to have the previous certification (NRA/TECLOSE/etc.), and DPS is cracking down on that. The CHL-90 is being revised, and once it is revised, then we all have to download it and send it in to get in line for a class. As we have all found out, the requirement for the previous NRA/TECLOSE/etc. certification has always been in the state code, just hasn't been enforced until now. I have all my paperwork in to DPS except CHL-90, and when I spoke to DPS on Wednesday was told that the CHL-90 would be finished soon. That is supported by a comment from a spokesperson from DPS to a local Austin newspaper that the CHL-90 would be finished soon. However, for the OP, your application will not be complete until you get your NRA certification in. And it is my understanding that you will not be entered into the 'line' for class in Austin until your application is complete. After you take your NRA class, get your certificate in, fill out the CHL-90, assuming it is fixed by then :smilelol5: , and sit back and relax!

Whoo Hoo!!! I downloaded the CHL-90 on Sunday, filled it out, and faxed it Sunday night. This morning, my status is CHL-90 RECEIVED!! Only took 2 days for status to update. Now, for the wait for the stinkin' class. Lady at DPS who I've been working with says looking like about 6 months for the wait for the class for those who have ALL paperwork (including prior certification) in to DPS. Let's hope that truly is the case!

I got online the first week of January before all the changes regarding the new CHL-90 and enforcing the requirement of instructor certification to be able to take the class were annnounced. Filled out the CHL-90 and did the fingerprints along with payment. Mailed...took about two weeks to update but status says everything received and I've been in background under review for about 4 or 5 weeks. I planned on taking the NRA instructor course before all the changes and took the classes the weekend of January 19-21. Then the changes happened and I emailed DPS asking what they wanted me to do, sent in NRA certification stuff now or wait for them to send me an email requesting it. Two weeks later I get an email (not one specifically answering me, but the general one everyone is getting about the new CHL-90 form being available). So I guess I'm going to have to call and find out if they want me to fill out the new CHL-90 and send in my NRA certificates or just send in the certificates since they already have a CHL-90 on file for me. I don't want to lose my place in line for a class. Added to this, I STILL don't have my certificates from the NRA yet. My Training Coordinator said he can send me a temporary one to prove I took the course. This is a mess.

According to my trainer, the document they give out at the completion of the class should be sufficient for DPS.

Scan your certificate you got in class to pdf and attach to email to regulatory services. Be sure to reference your receipt number. Once they have it you'll be good to go. I know they are planning a class in April. Believe me I started this back in August and had to do the exact same thing.
