The 2 that are listed is the Basic Pistol and Firearm Safety in the Home which includes the BIT. I read that it is now official that we will have to be certified prior to renewal.
Where did you read that?
A friend of mine spoke with one of the DPS Instructors who told them that all must be certified TECLOSE or NRA instructors prior to renewal. I know a lot of us had assumed, but this was first time I heard it as coming from anyone official. Or were you meaning where did I read that BIT came with the Firearm Safety in the Home course? That is stated on the link above.
No offense intended towards your friend, but until DPS puts that out publicly, isn't that kind of like a "friend of a friend said"? FYI, I've got no dog in this fight as I'm not an instructor (yet) and am just taking my NRA courses this weekend.
My point is that before we had put two and two together and came to some reasonable assumptions we would have to at renewal for all to be on same page, but that this was the first time I had heard anyone say they specifically spoke to anyone connected to the DPS CHL instructor program and received an answer. That remains true.

I told him the confusion might lay with my open CHL Instructor application. He immediately asked me if I had my NRA instructor certification, to which I replied I am taking the class today. Good, he said, because that is being required of all TX CHL instructors, and I know that there are some instructors today who won't be instructors this time next year.

Take it for what it's worth. I think DPS knew January 1 what their stance was going to be on renewal instructors, but did not want to put out any information until they had the CHL-90 revamped with official language. The fact that someone at DPS emailed out renewal information inadvertently got the ball rolling faster. Hopefully renewal instructors that are members of this forum will be ahead of the curve!! :rules:

And no, this is not hearsay. This is my conversation with DPS! And by the way, I did get my NRA cert done yesterday/today, so hopefully I can get into an Austin class sometime this year!!

She's a front row Joe...

I understand she got "excited" over one test questions. I'm still hearing about it today that she only made a 98. :banghead: I would have been happy if I made the required 90. :biggrinjester:

She also had the pattern in the group the lady can shoot. Everyone in the class did a great job. Our instructor was very good I enjoyed the program.

For a new instructor I had to submit form CHL-90 that just became downloadable from the DPS site yesterday (been waiting several months to get the form). The form is used when submitting your certification as a handgun instructor. so for at least first time canidates its official.

So I just took my NRA BIT/Basic Pistol class this weekend. We were told that it takes 8 to 12 weeks for the NRA to get our certification and paperwork to us. Has anyone been able to submit a copy of their NRA Instructor Course Completion card as proof to Texas or do we have to wait for the official documents from NRA? I was told by the NRA Training Counselor to make a copy and try sending it in with the CHL 90 form. Just curious if anyone else has tried that and if so, what were the results?

Follow your TC's advice. IF you were already a NRA member, then your on-line access to materials is valid as soon as the TC enters the class information.

CHLMan......I took the NRA instructor class on January 19-21. I FINALLY got the actual NRA certificates last week. I did call DPS and was told that the course completion form the Training Counselor could give you noting the courses you took and his name and TC number was fine to send in.
