Waiting on sidewalk to see Michael Jordan

#1

Post by philip964 »

I'm right now at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston waiting on the public sidewalk to see Michael Jordan and other celebs at his 50th birthday party.

HPD is being great. Other non police not so.

Non police are telling me to be across the street. HPD is politely asking me to stay back twenty feet or so. Being very protective of my rights, since it is a public sidewalk.

Keep you posted

Here is the photo I took of Michael and his wife.

I was hoping for lots more "stars" than just Michael. Of course I am so ignorant about the "in" people I probably missed them.

It was fun being a paparazzi for an hour.

Had an interesting discussion with a policeman. I mentioned how I took a picture of George W. Bush and how far the Secret Service made me stand. He mentioned that Houston Police are given an exclusion zone and are not allowed to stand or be anywhere near a different president as they are armed.

The Houston police were great and kept the non police from running roughshod over me. I apparently was very annoying to the non police. I got the feeling in other states the police follow the non police's orders. As these guys seemed upset the police respected my rights. :txflag:

Sorry my ham handed photoshopping looks real bad this big. There was a head in the photo I tried to take out.

Hmmmm....

I'm trying to think of who I would be willing to stand around for just to "see".

Hmmmmm................

Nope. Can't think of anyone.

I guess I'm just getting old and cynical.

Hope you had a good time regardless.

A lot of us aren't impressed by celebrities.

As for requesting anyone's autograph, yuk, what an act of utter self-abnegation.

Asking for an autograph is like announcing "I'm not worthy"!

I should be driving down 77 at 7:15 in the morning if you want a pic of my truck as I drive by. It was made in Texas by Texans.

I had a kid ask for my autograph once...it was pretty humbling to me. I was sort of a rockcrawling (offroading/Jeeping) "personality/character" there for awhile...well, I'm still a character...LOL (you know, Character is one of those things that either you HAVE or your ARE! :biggrinjester: ).

I've gotten two sports-related autographs in my life. Both were Christian athletes who spoke at a church event and stayed afterwards to chat and sign autographs.

Meadowlark Lemon (when I was about 6-7 years old)
David Murphy (my 4-year old son got a signed baseball and a fist bump)

We're unabashed Murphy fans in our house and have been since the Rangers traded with Boston to get him.

My brother has a framed autographed picture of Payne Stewart and one of Nolan Ryan (it says, "Don't Mess with Texas" and shows him with Robin Ventura in the famous headlock, fist clinched and on its way toward Ventura). I got to display those at my house for about five years while my brother was still living at home or in apartments. He also has a Deion Sanders football that I couldn't care less about.

I was never a Jordan fan, and especially wrote him off after his Hall of Fame induction speech. He sounded so arrogant, especially compared to the humility and graciousness of David Robinson at the same event (and I'm NOT a Spurs fan, but I hold DR in high regard).

The only other player I'd like to get an autograph from is Robbie Ross. . . and luckily, there probably wouldn't be an hour-long wait for his yet (but I expect that to change soon). Still, I won't go out of my way to get it.

In general, though, I don't let other people write their names on my stuff. But I understand why some people do.

*In the interest of full disclosure, I just remembered I got Daryl Johnston's autograph in college, but I don't still have it. He was at North Texas and I saw his table as I walked to the Baptist Student Ministry. The line was about five minutes long, so I stopped by and chatted with him for a bit. He was a very nice guy. I even made him listen to me tell him that I played fullback in junior high and wore #48, but our school called it the Mooseback position. He liked that.

An article from July 25, 2016? Seems like an entirely new world since then.
