Florida nears 1 million permits for concealed weapons

#1

Post by Vol Texan »

The number of active concealed weapons licenses in Florida, already home to more owners of such registered weapons than any other U.S. state, is expected to reach the 1 million mark next week, a state official said on Wednesday.
"The number of gun owners is up and crime is down," Hammer said. "Criminals commit crimes, but they aren't stupid. They don't want to get shot."
I packed a firearm in a checked bag on a trip to visit my mom in Florida a few weeks back. It was my first time (a) checking a firearm and (b) carrying in another state. If I had known then what I've know now about how 2A-friendly the Sunshine state is, I wouldn't have been so nervous.

It's a pretty good value. I'm not surprised they get a lot of customers.

Here's a link to Florida's Division of Licensing Statistical Reports:

Number of Licensees by Type as of January 31, 2013: 1,011,731
http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/stats/ ... y_Type.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Applications and Dispositions for July 01, 2012 – June 30, 2013. All issued licenses, initial and renewals, are listed at the bottom of page 3.

A brief summary of the stats:

Statewide licenses issued (initial and renewal): 123,202
Out of State licenses issued (initial and renewal): 15,551

Grand Total of licenses issued (initial and renewal) from July 01, 2012 – June 30, 2013: 138,753 with approx 11.21% of licenses issued to Out of State applicants.
http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/stats/ ... annual.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Let's use 11.21% of licenses, issued to Out of State applicants since July of 2012, as a ballpark estimate of active licenses issued by Florida. Out of the 1,011,731 total active licenses, there are approximately 113,415 of those that have been issued to Out of State applicants since Florida began the program. Unfortunately, the state of Florida doesn't break-down their report info any further, so a more accurate Out of State issue statistic is not available at this time.

Hope this helps to clear things up a bit...
Steve

Nope, only similar to Texas. In Florida open carry is lawful while engaged in, or going directly to and from, lawful Target Shooting, Hunting, Fishing, and Camping expeditions. FL Statutes 790.35(3)(h), (j), and (k)

Additiionally, you have to have a permit from your state to carry concealed as Florida doesn't honor a non-resident permit unless it is from Florida.

Ever hear of George Zimmerman, Treyvon Martin, and Stand Your Ground laws being challenged in Florida?

That's probably true. Florida, by the way, is ANOTHER formerly reliably conservative state which is swinging democrat.

How could it be formerly reliable? Remember 2000? Jeepers!

George Bush was asked a few days before the election how things were going in Florida. He had been told that they were going real well, his brother, the Governor, had told him that Florida was OK, for sure.

Then he added, "Of course, this was the same brother who told me it was OK to park Dad's car on the front lawn..." :smilelol5:

There was a time when Florida WAS quite conservative, but things have changed. Currently, about 85% of those living in Florida are from somewhere else, with large numbers coming from California and the New England states. Unfortunately, they bring their crappy liberal ideas with them and, as we've seen in the last half dozen Presidential elections, their votes have started to significantly change the electoral landscape in Florida. :banghead:
