From the American Medical Association
I received the following today from the American Medical Association, not a friend of 2nd ammendment rights....
CDC: Nearly two-thirds of US gun deaths are suicides.
On its front page, the New York Times (2/14, A1, Tavernise, Subscription Publication, 1.68M) reports, "The gun debate has focused on mass shootings and assault weapons since the schoolhouse massacre in Newtown, Conn., but far more Americans die by turning guns on themselves." In fact, "nearly 20,000 of the 30,000 deaths from guns in the United States in 2010 were suicides, according to the most recent figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The national suicide rate has climbed by 12 percent since 2003, and suicide is the third-leading cause of death for teenagers."
So, if we believe that the CDC has the right numbers, 2/3 of all gun deaths are suicides and, in my opinion, not likely to be reduced by either gun bans or background checks. Seems that anyone that serious will find another way to end their life. That leaves 10,000 gun related deaths. Cleaning up Chicago might help reduce that number. The issue for the democrats has always been to disarm the public and damn the constitution. For the NY TIMES the issue is that eliminating guns is the panacea for eliminating suicide...

Re: From the American Medical Association
would be interesting to breakout the stats for gang... bg on bg crime, along with police shooting the BG and plus defensive.. bet that 10k goes way down...
Re: From the American Medical Association
If 2/3 are suicides30,000 deaths from guns
That leaves 10,000 gun related deaths.
The 10,000 broken down might be ...
Includes guesstimating 1/4 of the 10,000=Police shooting criminals, guesstimating 1/4 of the 10,000=good guys shooting criminals, and guesstimating 1/4 of the 10,000=criminals shooting other criminals and guesstimating 1/4 of the 10,000= criminals shooting those innocents unable or unwilling to defend themselves, the defenseless ones in Government or self-imposed in all practicality: gunfree zones
And, the rare accidental or negligent occurrence. or the maybe person we read warnings about who choked while trying to swallow one.

Re: From the American Medical Association
knocks it down in round figures to 10K.. of those 10 what were the disposition of them?
Re: From the American Medical Association
I don't know. Does the left care? The campaign is to eliminate guns not violence. They only use numbers to suit themselves. Texting while driving is probably worse number wise as far as preventable deaths.knocks it down in round figures to 10K.. of those 10 what were the disposition of them?
Re: From the American Medical Association
The statistics aren't broken down that way. You can break them down geographically all the way to county level. There are associated tables that allow you to see offender and victim stats by age, gender, and race as well. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/ucr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hopefully, without sounding morbid or uncaring, givet these statistics, how would a ban on high capacity magizines help then as if it would in any case. But it seems that these statistics could, in a small way, help our fight. Just my .02

Re: From the American Medical Association
Australia used suicide rates to help justify their gun ban and confiscation.
I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.

Re: From the American Medical Association
Soooo... The answer is we need more murders by firearm to bring down the percentage of suicides?
And just how small DOES the magazine need to be to prevent a suicide?

No magazine at all is needed, except perhaps in the case of magazine disconnects...sjfcontrol wrote:And just how small DOES the magazine need to be to prevent a suicide?
We are back to getting rid of all firearms, even though there are many other ways to commit suicide...
Ultimately, it goes back to the end goal. Get rid of all firearms one way or another, either to prevent suicides, for the children, to prevent mass shootings, etc.....

Re: From the American Medical Association
The question is how does this lower the suiside rate. A person that decides to commit suiside will do it even if they have to ram someone head on with their vehicle or rush a cop with a knife. Even two wires screwed into a light socket, with the stripped ends clamped in their teeth, and throw the switch. If they want to do it, they cannot be stopped short of a rubber room.
