I keep in touch with my former partners and friends. Set the settings to private and DO NOT put anything on it that you don't want out there, because somebody will find a way to bypass the privacy settings and copy it.

Anyone can see what you post on this forum. Only those you allow to see your FB page can access it. If I were worried about Big Brother I wouldn't be posting on this forum.
Exactly

And the internet tends to bring out and amplify issues that people have in real life. People that dont get long online also typically dont get along in real life.
The keyboard provides some encouragement to the shy or non confrontational but - people are people. the internet may magnify it but what you see is the persons personality. In many cases people talk smack online when they wouldnt have the courage to say the same thing in person. BUT it doenst mean that they dont think it or mean it.

Im a sarcastic, blunt, opinionated SOB both online and in real life.

if you dont like FB dont use it. Just dont make it seem that anyone that disagrees with you must be malfunctioned.

yes, I'm on FB, I've reconnected with highschool friends, I keep up with friends from out of state, it makes it easier for out of town family to know what's going on with my elderly mother-in-law, I can brag about my latest batch of soap, or my latest finished quilt, and I can rant politically. it's perfect for me. ;-)

I also have two facebook "fan pages," or whatever they're called....one for my business, and one for my photography stuff.

I too did not have a fb page till last year and now I am very active. It is very addictive and I have like few hundreds friends. Mostly extended family members. We started a family page and we have more than 150 families of our extended family on the fb page. The plan is organize and strength our charitable family Association to help and support those who are in need. Note that back home there is no social welfare, nor governmental loans for those who would like to attend non-public universities, such as the American University of Beirut, my Alma Matter.

I am also active in my HOA and kids school's PTA fb pages.

I also post and support 2nA issues. Even when my audience are not living in the US.

Having followed the development of such things over the years, Facebook is a very interesting case...

On the surface is seemed to explode in popularity by chance (considering the ideal what certainly not new), but underneath I often classify it as the greatest "Social Engineering" experiment every conducted. Why? Well if you think about it, if a stranger off the street (or "Big Brother") came to your door, and started asking you personal questions... who you are, what are your activities, who you friends are, etc... you would most certainly go tell them to fly a kite (it not so kind words). Certainly, demanding people to hand over information makes them very suspicious/combative... and that is a well understood issue... so rather then fight it, it is far easier to give them a venue to "share"... suddenly they are handing over the same information willingly (particularly since narcissism has exploded in recent years)

This of course makes it a paradise for the criminals and the government... both of which partake themselves in Facebook data regularly... and if you really think about it, what seems to be harmless information on the surface isn't so harmless if you put your mind to it. The most basic example... think about the "security" questions your bank and other important establishments use... "pets name", "favorite color", "city you grew up in", etc... then think about how much of that is potentially exposed from your profiles, pictures, list of friends etc.

"Oh but I use these here privacy controls!" Sorry... Facebook is in the business of making money (particularly after they went public with their IPO), and what is it they have that is worth money? You data of course. You might be shocked how much that data has been sold/resold (more times then you can count)... because that is where the money is at, and compared to your privacy, money is far more important. Of course notwithstanding Facebook does not have the greatest track record for security either...

Anywho you don't have take my word for it... security experts classify it as their worst nightmare, and "alphabet soup agencies" think it is the best thing since sliced bread... just ask them sometime

I am so old and ugly that posting my face would crash the web worldwide. My wife loves me anyway, and since she is the person I love most in this world, I make sure she is always in my face. She talks to me in person, over the phone, and by GMRS. For those I love also, but not as much, they know to call me, or if they love me less, to email me. If they invite me to frind them on farcebook, I know that they don't love me. Farcebook is a pox upon humanity.

ryouiki,

Bingo, but FBers will squirm with your perspective, most likely with a "yeah, but..." response.

Another perspective I find disturbing is the whole "friends" thing. It's has a weird, cult like vibe.

I guess the equivalent is "followers" when it comes to (gag) tweeting...

A "friend" is someone who will help you dig a hole, a good friend is someone who will help you hide a body :biggrinjester:

I would suggest that all access to internet, including your cell phone, sattelite/cable receivers, gps devices, computers, etc. because, with each use of these devices, you leave a digital footprint that can be used by big brother. If you don't like facebook, don't use it. Just don't fool yourself into falsely thinking you are more "protected" from big brother.

I laugh when people talk about Big Brother on FB when they have just posted pics of every firearm they own on this forum.

It is a better solution than "reply all" like happens on e-mail. Friends are nothing more than an RSS feed. You become a friend and then get the RSS feed like data about what they post on FB. I can scroll past it all much more quickly than I can if I get individual e-mail messages every time.

I'm trying to stay current on the technology. I never got into the smartphone messaging because I wasn't willing to pay the monthly costs. I don't have Twitter figured out completely yet either but I have an account and am working with it. I'm comfortable with FB and find that it can serve some useful purposes. To me, it is somewhat like a gun. If you get careless with it, you can hurt yourself. If you use it as intended, use caution about how you handle it and don't get carried away, it can be beneficial and fun. My wife has an extended family across the country and no other way of sharing information has worked as well for that group.

Like others, I use my FB account for political purposes and find that it serves me just fine. I get to "like" and comment on things which then get shared with others who might delete the same information if I sent it to them as an e-mail. I'm not viewed as obnoxious for doing those as much as I would be for the e-mail. There are a lot of people who see my pro-2a stuff that would not likely have seen it any other way. I view that as a good thing.
