My first IDPA fun match

#1

Post by Wodathunkit »

Went to my first one last night. Met lots of nice people. Lots of us "newbies" there. Folks seemed to be quite patient with us and that was most appreciated.

Im going to tell on my self. I was shocked on my first scenario; I peered around "cover" and just about completely forgot how to shoot, my grip was wrong....I was shooting with my left eye???....fumbled around trying to be "safe" on my magazine reload.... Even with all that, the range officer said he appreciated me listening to instruction, and for being safety minded :hurry:

Once he built my confidence up, I did better the rest of the night. :thumbs2:

On a side note, it was at the Arms Room in League City. Between rounds, it became obvious that I needed a magazine holder so I went into the sales room and asked a employee to show me some, he walked me over to that section and.......Completely sold out!

He seemed genuinely shocked. He was surprised with everything being scarfed up in the panic buying. I can't imagine magazine holsters making Senator Frankinstiens "ban" list!?!

If you were there, I hope I got to meet you.

Well done, I think many of us IDPA shooters can relate based on our first time.

Congratulations! Yes, the first time is always enlightening. Many people think,"Well, I am a great shot at the target range, I will do great!" Maybe, but in all likelihood once the buzzer sounds and the adrenaline rushes, it's another story. Learning to shoot from cover, reload under pressure, and etc. can help one determine how his/her CCW carry equipment will hold-up. Keep at it and a good place to get gear is CompTac. They are Texas based and they support IDPA. http://www.comp-tac.com/

Hope to try it soon. My closest event that I can find is Cedar Ridge/Texas Tactical. Sinc all my vehicles are having troubles right now, the drive from San Antonio seems scarier than the match. Soon I hope.
Armed not dangerous but potentially lethal.

Glad you had a good time! We had a much larger group than normal last night. Usually we can get 6 scenarios done in the time that it took us to do those 4 last night.

If you were who I think you were, then I was watching you pretty close on the first scenario (as I do with all new shooters) and you were indeed good about keeping your finger off the trigger and maintaining good muzzle control. ( I was the fat guy in the pink vest).

Is Arms Room IDPA going to be crowded the next couple of weeks leading up to the Classifier? I was planning to come for the first time this coming Monday, but I wasn't sure if it would be overly crowded the next few weeks.

It's hard to say. We were pretty crowded this week because we had not had matches the previous two weeks and the weather had caused several other outdoor matches to be cancelled. We had 40 signed up online and wound up with 58 shooters. If you keep track of the online signups http://teamtrainwreck.idpaclub.org/Matc ... nList.aspx you can generally expect 10-15 more to show up that didn't sign up online.

If you plan on shooting with us, it's really helpfull if you sign up online. It makes imputing of scores much easier and if we know ahead of time that we are going to be crowded, it allows us to build scenarios that run quicker and are easy to reset.

Good group them Trainwreckers. Fun to shoot with and quite patient with new shooters.

Hope you keep coming out.

Is team train wreck affiliated with The Arms Room? Or do y'all just go there on Monday? Should I sign up with y'all or just show up at the range?

About how much did it cost to to shoot the match?
Round count?
Match Fees?
Any other costs besides gas?
I am kind of on a budget (poor) and want to get into IDPA shooting but I need to plan and save up a little cash before I just go out and play.

So I paid $20 to the arms room. No other fees. I went through a box of ammo, but we didn't get to shoot the whole six rounds. I imagine we would want to bring about a hundred to make sure you don't run out. You will need a holster and a mag holster (which I don't have....yet).

I'm going to do it for the next two Mondays, if it goes well, I will join team train wreck. It is a low, annual fee.
