AR15 Uppers

I have a few questions for the more experienced AR folks.

1. How difficult is it to assemble an upper? I have above average mechanical skills and a pretty full tool chest. Lots of files, hacksaws and channellock pliers.

2. Does anyone know if the supply of barrels, BCGs and all other upper components are also in short supply? I have not checked AR15.com lately. I would imagine that components are suffering the same fate.

The only unique tool would be a barrel wrench to assemble/remove the barrel nut.
Anyone with some basic tinkering tools can do it (assemble an AR), with a bit of patience.
I am certainly not a gunsmith. I didn't find it very difficult.

You need a receiver block, barrel wrench and torque wrench. It takes about 10-30 min to put it together if you are using a barrel that already has a pinned fsb or if you are using a screw on gas block. If you have to drill and ream the barrel to pin on a gas block then it gets more complicated.

Uppers are simple. You do not need too much equipment.
A good quality barrel wrench is about the only specialized tool you need. There are others, such as a gas-tube alignment tool, a front sight pinning block, and vice blocks. I went old-school and used a barrel extension torque tool from Brownells instead of a vice block. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools ... 27452.aspx

Yes, components are in extremely-short supply. I did manage to piece together a bolt carrier group this past week but had to do a lot of searching on different web sites to get the components.

fortunately parts will come back into supply eventually. Lowers are te big item right now. As long as you have the lower everything else can likely wait. If a ban comes then probably in good shape with the lower in hand.

As above though. Pretty easy to put together the whole gun from a pile of parts. First couple will take some time as you figure it all out. After that you can do it pretty quick.

Get your barrel from Adco.

BCGs are very scarce and were so pre newton.

There is a guy on THF with a couple of Stag uppers with BCGs for normal prices.

That Jse site has pistol uppers for about 350-400. Is that a good, pre-craze price?

It's a monolithic upper mid-length that is quite versatile. I just need a BCG, Gas Tube, and .625 Gas block.

It is supposed to be lighter and stronger than a free float system but has all the same benefits. I am pairing it with a pencil profile barrel for an ultra light weight setup that will have the least bit of recoil (mid-length gas system) hopefully.

I have a Model 1 upper I am quite please with, and it was complete so no assembly needed. I have a 6.8 SPC upper from them that is deadly accurate, but heavy match barrel. They have all types of uppers though. Good luck, as once you have uppers they are quite easy to move from lower to lower.

Just curious if the upper was really shipped or not. Aero still hasn't freed any up on their store but brownells may have a deal going with them to drop ship what they actually have on the shelves.

I would recommend getting a BCG of a reputable maker who HPT and MPIs their bolts and buy from a reputable supplier.
