Boston LEO foils robbery. At donut shop.

Post by JALLEN »

If you’re going to rob a doughnut shop, don’t be surprised when a cop shows up.

An MBTA Transit cop’s fortuitous arrival at a Charlestown Dunkin’ Donuts at exactly the right moment thwarted an armed robbery in progress.

Officer Matthew Donovan, 29, said he was just “grabbing a cup of coffee” when he entered a crowded Dunkin’ Donuts on Cambridge Street in Charlestown at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Instead, he heard an irritated voice demanding money from the cashier at the counter.

Almost like robbing a gun shop!
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Charlestown is a neighborhood within the City of Boston and has been well-known over
the years for Irish-American organized crime, especially the knocking over of armored cars.

This was dramatized in the movie "The Town".

Charlestown is also the site of Breeds Hill, next to Bunker Hill. During one of the first battles of the American
Revolution there, the number of British officers killed during the engagement was 25% of all the British officers
killed during the American Revolution.

Charlestown is where the USS Constitution is docked, aka "Old Ironsides". It is the longest commissioned vessel
in the US Navy. It is one of the original 6 ships authorized by the Naval Act of 1794, was launced in 1797, and
remains a commissioned US Navy ship. It was nicknamed Old Ironsides because its timbers were known to have
British cannon balls bounce off them.

Keith B: Your entry reminds me of a real life incident that happened just
up the street from Charlestown, Mass. in either Medford or Somerville, Mass.

There is a restaurant chain up there known as the "99", which is about like Chili's.
One day a group of wiseguys (Italian Mafia guys) were eating, when in walked a rival group of
wiseguys.

Harsh words were exchanged. Handguns were produced and the gunfight
between the 2 groups was on, with one group seated at their tables, and the
more recent arrivals standing up.

What stopped the fun was a large group of plain clothes cops who were also there
eating. Some deaths of bad guys resulted, some woundings, and the majority
of the BG's were either captured inside the 99, or right outside in the parking lot.
