Doorbell at 2 a.m.- Thought I Might Have to Shoot.
This morning at 2am my doorbell rang. I put my robe on and grab my 9 and head downstairs to see what fool is at my door. I'm at code red/alert level 4 or whatever now. I creep up to the peep hole and no one was there. I waited a few seconds and heard voices: 2 males and 1 female but couldn't see where they were. I stand and watch at the peep hole and the female comes around from the front of my neighbors house (to my left) and approaches my door and rings the bell again. I shout through the door "who is it?". She replies with whatever her name was; I forget. I shout "what do you need?" She says she is looking for Tye. I informed her there was no "Tye" that lived here and she had the wrong house. She tells me "Tye" stole something from her house and she wants it back. I tell her again there is no "Tye" here and she has the wrong house and she best leave! She mumbled something and walked back into the dark, around the bush that was obscuring my view of the van where the two men were. I heard them talk some more and then start to drive off. I ran around to my downstairs bedroom window to get a good look at the vehicle and get the phone to call the sheriff's office and they stopped in front of my house and watched me as I watched them. After about 15 seconds, they slowly drive off and leave the area.
Thought about calling it in but I didn't. Wish I had. Didn't sleep at all afterwards. Every noise in the house had me wondering if someone was trying to get in.
I think if I had opened the door, they probably would have rushed me. I'm hoping they didn't go and target someone else.

Armed not dangerous but potentially lethal.

I think I understand what he meant. I think the OP was simply saying that he was thinking that this might easily degrade into a situation where he would have to shoot......not that he actually thought he would have to shoot then and there.pbwalker wrote:at what point did you think you might have to shoot?

Thanks TAM. That's exactly what I meant. I get people coming to my house by mistake all the time. Every third house is the same model in my community, just different colors. This instance felt different. I didn't feel they had the wrong house. I think they were looking for someone to "Tye" up!The Annoyed Man wrote:I think I understand what he meant. As far as calling the sheriff, in the moment, I didn't want to lose track of her or them. When they drove off I figured it was over. 30 min later I started dialing but realized I didn't have enough details to waste their time or my sleep.

Please, please, please rethink this. You never know what tidbits of information might wind up being helpful to the LEO. If you don't give them the crumbs of info, nobody will ever know.jayinsat wrote:As far as calling the sheriff, in the moment, I didn't want to lose track of her or them. I'll quit carrying a gun when they make murder and armed robbery illegal

I agree, it's highly likely they tried another house or twenty...RHenriksen wrote:Please, please, please rethink this. 0200 hrs and the doorbell rings and you answer it? Ok, thru the door, but still....
If that were to happen at my house; my first thing to do is call 911 and let them know what's going on while making sure my shotgun is ready to go. Peep out windows that are away from the door to get a good view of vehicle, # of persons, etc.; whatever information I could pick up to give 911 the best description.
No contact with whomever is at the door.
Trust me, if its nighttime and they're at your door? They know you're home.
And they ain't lookin' for "Ty" either. They're looking for YOU.
Sit and wait for cops to roll up.
Sorry to be hard on you, but you we talking to them at the door. Really?
If they had a firearm, they could have shot through the door; could have mortally wounded you or incapacitated you.
What would happen to your family then?
I echo what was said before; the cops need every scrap of information like this. Its another piece in a puzzle that might save someone the heartache of actually opening the door when they went to the next house.
Glad you're safe and hope they've move on to somewhere else; like jail.

If they were talking loud enough for you to hear they probably werent planning a home invasion....possibly a drug deal, & Tye took their money....or maybe she was a "working girl" and Tye ripped her off - whatever it was... maybe those clowns were still driving around looking for him. Sounds like someone was going to be dealt some misery.
Not dumping on you as you were probably still half asleep LOL... but it would have been prudent to call the police. Heck the goobers might have thought you were lying and planned to come back. All is well that ends well.

You call 911 for someone ringing your doorbell? My locals won't come out at that hour for a loud party keeping me awake never mind somebody waking me by ringing the doorbell.LabRat wrote:0200 hrs and the doorbell rings and you answer it? Ok, thru the door, but still....![]()
