Buying guns with a CHL

#1

Post by BioGuy »

Howdy folks,

I have a quick question about background checks when purchasing a gun as a CHL holder. I tried to search the forums but trying to search anything with "background check" just gets me every waiting room post ever created.

So here we go:

I heard on a podcast that once you get your CHL you do not have to undergo the quick background check when you purchase firearms. Is that true? Now that I have my CHL can I go in and buy a gun without filling out a bunch of paperwork and waiting for them to call it in or file it online? I know it only takes a few seconds now that you can fill the form out electronically in gun stores equipped to do so; but I have been wondering about it since I heard the guys talking about it on one of the gun related podcasts I listen to.

Thanks guys,

Joel

I purchased a glock at Academy last week. First purchase with my chl. The clerk was ESTATIC when I handed him my CHL. Still had to fill out the form but was able to leave a few lines blank. He said because of the CHL, no bkgd check was required. It was much quicker than my previous two purchases pre-chl.

having the CHL basically saves you 3-10 minutes, depending on if the FFL can contact the NICS and get approval quickly.

having a CHL also removes the risk of having NICS deny the sale

You still have to fill out the same form.

Have purchased with a CHL at Academy, Carter's Country and at a gun show. Still had to fill out the paperwork but none were called in.

With all the panic buying, there have been several instances at my lgs that they have said NICS has crashed and people would have to come back. Then he looks at me, gives me the form and smiles bc he knows he doesnt have to use the system for me. I feel special when that happens

I bought a mini-14 today at Gander Mountain. Showed my CHL, but they said they had to call NICS anyway.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Walther PPS at the same place, and they didn't call that in. Go figure. :???:

Unless you just have to have thet one, I would walk. I did the same at Academy when they tried to call it in. If they want to they certainly can do that but I can walk away just as easily.

I don't think its required for them to call in to get a go-no go, but some do it anyway because they believe that ALL must be called in and approved or disapproved. I am not sure because all sales must have a control number assigned, I think that CHL Holders are not in the go or no go area just a control number assignment, but the part I don't think I like is that the CHL info is given and is surely kept someplace.

Bought a new pistol this past weekend at the Mesquite show - another buyer was sitting at the table in the only chair having already completed his form and the dealer was calling it in. I completed my form standing up, handed the dealer my DL and CHL, plus crisp bills - dealer marked on the form a little, wrote receipt, handed over change and pistol - and I was outta there well under 10 minutes. Other guy was still waiting for dealer to get thru.

I did the same. I picked up a G23 last week a few days after I received my chl. You have to fill out the transfer form 4473 and no background check.

The responsible FFL does not HAVE to call it in if you have a valid CHL.. but he is not restricted from calling it in.

Ms E.M and I are 75/25 in presenting a CHL and having it called in.. 4 guns since she got her CHL.... 3 not called in, 1 was. three different locations.
